Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Project was launched in 1983 by the GOI. After 32 years, the first indigenously designed and built Tejas LCA was handed over to the Indian Air Force by the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. The Tejas LCAs are intended to replace the phased out Mig-21 Fighter jets.
The Tejas LCAs are designed for air to air, air to ground, and air to sea combat roles. The entire work was carried by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) & Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the project development cost in Rs 17269 crore.
