Union minister Nitin Gadkari Unveiled India’s 1st and World’s 2nd 100% Methanol-Powered Prototype Truck in BengaluruCountry's first 100% methanol-powered prototype truck flagged off in BengaluruOn March 12, 2023, the union minister Nitin Gadkari, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways(MoRTH) unveiled India’s first and world’s second 100% methanol-powered 10-tonne prototype truck in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Key Points:
i.The technology of converting diesel, petrol and CNG (Compressed natural gas) engines into operating on 100% methanol (M100) is an initiative under a developmental programme undertaken by the NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) along with the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) Ashok Leyland and IISc (Indian Institute of Science) with financial assistance from the Department of Science and Technology(DST).
ii.The technology was piloted in BMTC (Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation) buses and Ashok Leyland trucks.
iii.The prototype truck is set to be launched shortly as a market offering to replace diesel in the logistics sector.
Nitin Gadkari Launched MD15 BMTC buses:
Nitin Gadkari also launched 10 MD15 (15% blending of methanol with diesel) BMTC in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

  • NITI Aayog, IOCL and ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) Pune, Maharashtra have decided to conduct field trials in three cities with 20 transport buses for a period of three months.
  • The BMTC agreed and granted permission to Ashok Leyland to carry out field trials. Thus the first national pilot programme for methanol diesel buses will be carried out in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Features of MD15 Fuel:
i.MD15 fuel is meeting all legal emission limits. It met a substantial PM (Particulate Matter), HC (hydrocarbons) and CO (carbon monoxide) reduction and also provides an improvement in CO2 (Carbon dioxide) emissions.
ii.It also reduces pollution on parameters of particulate matter, SOX and NOX by 20%.
Additional Info: 
i.In 2016 NITI Aayog formed a ‘Methanol Economy’ programme and a committee led by Dr VK Saraswat to assess the total potential of methanol as an alternative fuel to diesel, petrol and LPG.
ii.Methanol is a low-carbon, hydrogen-carrier renewable fuel produced from high ash coal, agricultural residue, CO2 from thermal power plants and natural gas.
iii.NITI Aayog also stated the domestic and international availability of Methanol in scalable quantities to replace diesel to the tune of 15%.

Highlights of The Visit of Australian PM Anthony Albanese to India – March 8-11, 2023Highlights of Australian PM Anthony Albanese's 4 days visit to India from March 8-11 2023Australian Prime Minister (PM) Anthony Albanese visited India for four days from March 8 to 11, 2023, with the objective of enhancing overall bilateral engagement in a number of fields, including trade, investment, and critical minerals.

  • This was the first official visit he made to India since becoming PM in May 2022 and the first visit by an Australian PM in six years.

i.Australian PM Anthony Albanese first arrived at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad (Gujarat), and visited the Sabarmati Ashram, where he paid tribute to the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
ii.The 4th Commemorative Cricket Test Match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between the Indian and Australian cricket teams was inaugurated at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, by the Prime Ministers of India and Australia, marking the beginning of the visit.
On March 9, 2023, Australian PM Anthony Albanese addressed the ‘India-Australia CEO Forum’ in Mumbai (Maharashtra), stating that the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) agreed upon between the two nations is a transformative pact that will unleash the next level of potential in trade and investment.

Ministry of Defence Signs Rs 934 crore Contract with HSL for Refit of Sindhukirti SubmarineHindustan Shipyard gets ₹934-crore contract to refit Sindhukirti submarineOn 13th March 2023, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract for Normal Refit of INS Sindhukirti (S61) Submarine at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (AP), at an overall cost of Rs 934 crore.

  • The contract aims to enhance the submarine’s operational capability and extend its operational life.

About INS Sindhukirti (S61):
i. INS Sindhukirti (S61) is the 7th Sindhughosh-class diesel-electric submarine of the Indian Navy.
ii. Sindhukirti is the 3rd Kilo Class Diesel Electric Submarine.

  • It was built at the Admiralty Shipyard, one of the oldest and largest shipyards in Russia, and Sevmash in the Soviet Union.

iii. Sindukirti was commissioned on 9 December 1989 in the Soviet Union.
iv. The Indian Navy currently has 16 submarines in service, including one nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine and 7 Kilo Class submarines.
Key Points:
i. After the completion of Refit, Sindhukirti will be able to participate in combat and will join the Indian Navy’s active submarine fleet.
ii. This refit was offloaded to develop a different submarine repair facility and is an additional step towards undertaking a Medium refit with Life Certification at HSL.
iii. More than 20 Micro Small and Medium Businesses (MSMEs) are involved in the initiative, which will create 1,000 man-days of employment per day for the project duration.

SERB, STINT Signs MoC to Promote Research Networking between India & SwedenIndia and Sweden sign MoC to strengthen cooperation & promote research networkingOn March 13, 2023, the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT), Stockholm, Sweden, to strengthen cooperation and promote research networking between research institutions from both nations.

  • The MoC was signed by Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Secretary, SERB, and Dr. Andreas Göthenberg, Executive Director, STINT.

Key Points:
i.Participants: Dr. Erik Forsberg, Representative in APAC (Asia Pacific), STINT, Dr. S. Chandrasekhar Secretary, DST, Mr. Håkan Jevrell, State Secretary to Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, and Dr. Per-Arne Wikström, Counsellor – Innovation and Science, Office of Science and Innovation, Embassy of Sweden, were the other participants of the event.
ii.Under the MoC, mobility activities such as seminars, workshops and conferences will be held for achieving academic cooperation. The MoC will also enable the exchange of activities between India’s young scientists and Swedish researchers.
iii.Both SERB and STINT will support and fund researcher mobility through their regular funding programmes.
iv.They also plan to announce a call to fund new mobility projects which will facilitate the exchange of individuals, including workshops between participating research groups.

  • As it is being joint funding, researchers and scholars at institutions of higher education in both Sweden and India are eligible to apply for funding under this call.

Note – SERB is a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology established through an Act of Parliament (Science and Engineering Research Board Act, 2008) to support basic research in emerging areas of Science & Engineering.

Asia’s 1st Woman Loco Pilot Surekha Yadav operates Vande Bharat Express

Surekha Yadav, hailing from Satara, Maharashtra, Asia’s 1st female loco pilot, became the 1st woman to drive the recently launched semi-high speed Vande Bharat Express train.

  • On 13th March 2023, Surekha Yadav piloted the semi-high-speed train between Solapur station and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • Surekha Yadav became India’s 1st female train driver in 1988.

The Central Railway has launched 2 Vande Bharat Express trains on CSMT-Solapur and CSMT-Sainagar Shirdi routes, which were flagged by Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi on 10th February 2023.

France-led Multinational Naval Exercise ‘La Perouse 2023’ held in Indian Ocean Region France-led multinational naval exercise underway in Indian Ocean regionExercise La Perouse 2023, the 3rd edition of France-led multilateral (5 nation) naval exercise was held from 13th to 14th March 2023 in the Indian Ocean region (IOR). La Perouse 2023 witnessed the participation of personnel, ships and integral helicopters of the navies of Quad countries – India, Japan, Australia and the United States of America (USA); and the United Kingdom (UK) viz:
i.Indian Navy (IN) – India
ii.Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) – Japan
iii.Royal Australian Navy (RAN) – Australia
iv.United States Navy – USA
v.Royal Navy (RN) – UK
Note: Indigenously built guided missile frigate INS (Indian Naval Ship) Sahyadri and fleet tanker INS Jyoti represented India in the Exercise.
Aim of Exercise:
To enhance maritime domain awareness and optimize maritime coordination amongst the participating navies in the Indo-Pacific region
Key Points:
i.The exercise witnessed complex and advanced naval operations including surface warfare, anti-air warfare, air defence exercises, cross deck landings and tactical manoeuvres.

  • This enables developing closer links in planning, coordination and information sharing for seamless maritime operations.

ii.On March 10-11, 2023, the IN’s indigenously built guided missile frigate, INS Sahyadri participated in a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with French Navy (FN) ships FS Dixmude, a Mistral Class Amphibious Assault Ship and FS La Fayette, a La Fayette Class Frigate, in the Arabian Sea.
About La Perouse Exercise:
It is a multilateral naval exercise which has been conducted biennially since 2019. It is aimed at improving interoperability between navies and fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between participating nations. It provides platform for participating nations to showcase skills, understand each other’s methodologies & enhance ability to operate together.

  • The first edition saw the participation of the navies of Australia, Japan and the US.
  • In 2021 i.e. in the 2nd edition of the exercise, India participated for the first time in this exercise.

IQAir World Air Quality Report 2022 (5th Edition): Lahore Is Most Polluted City, Chad Worst Among CountriesLahore is most polluted city, Chad worst among countriesAccording to the 5th edition of the annual global survey report of IQAir, ‘World Air Quality Report 2022’, Lahore (Pakistan), become the city with the worst air in the world in 2022, (up from 15th in 2021). Chad in central Africa replaced Bangladesh as the country with the most polluted air in 2022 with PM2.5 levels of 89.7 µg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter).

  • The amount of PM2.5 (Particulate Matter 2.5) particles per cubic meter in the air in Lahore increased from 86.5 µg/m3 in 2021 to 97.4 µg/m3 in 2022, making it the most polluted city on earth.
  • Although India has some of the world’s most polluted cities, it ranks 8th in the 2022 report with PM2.5 levels of 53.3 µg/m3 (from 58.1 µg/m3 in 2021).

i.Chad (89.7 µg /m3) in central Africa exceeds the WHO PM2.5 annual guideline by more than 17 times.
ii.Iraq (80.1 µg /m3) exceeded the WHO PM2.5 annual guideline by more than 16 times.
iii.Pakistan (70.9 µg /m3) has a PM2.5 level that is more than 14 times higher than the WHO annual guideline.

IREDA gets Infrastructure Finance Company status from RBIIREDA gets ‘Infrastructure Finance Company’ status from RBIOn March 13, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted Infrastructure Finance Company (IFC) to the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) enabling the latter to take higher exposure in RE (Renewable Energy) financing.

  • This IFC status will also help the company to access a wider investor base for fund mobilization.
  • Earlier IREDA was classified as an ‘Investment and Credit Company (ICC)’.

Key Points:
i.This status has acknowledged IREDA’s 36 years of infrastructure financing and development with focused development of renewable energy.
ii.The recognition of IREDA as an IFC will increase the investors’ confidence, enhance the brand value, and generate a positive outlook in the market.
iii.IREDA will keep contributing towards Govt. of India’s target of 500 GW installed capacity of non-fossil fuels by 2030.
About Infrastructure Finance Company (IFC):
It is a non-deposit accepting loan company that primarily focuses on providing long-term financial assistance to infrastructure projects in India. These projects may include power generation, telecommunications, transportation, housing, and other infrastructure sectors. It is regulated by the RBI which monitors their compliance with various regulations.
IFC complies with the following:

  • A minimum of 75% of the total assets of an IFC-NBFC (Non Banking Financial Company) should be deployed in infrastructure loans;
  • The company should have minimum net-worth of Rs 300 crore,
  • The Capital to Risk (Weighted) Assets Ratio (CRAR) of the company should be at 15% with Tier I capital at 10% and

Rise in Women’s Savings Account:
As per the Suryoday SFB’s statement, around 79% of women (between the ages of 15-49 years) had a savings account in 2021, as compared to 53% in 2016, a nearly 50% increase in five years.

  • The bank mentioned the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) scheme, which was launched in 2014 as a cause for this significant increase.

About PMJDY:
i.PMJDY is National Mission for Financial Inclusion to ensure access to financial services, namely, basic savings & deposit accounts, remittance, credit, insurance, pension in an affordable manner.
ii.Under the scheme, a basic savings bank deposit (BSBD) account could be opened (by persons who is not having any other account) in any bank branch or Business Correspondent (Bank Mitra) outlet.
iii.Under the scheme around 48.27 Crore beneficiaries banked so far with Rs 194,194.29 Crore Balance in beneficiary accounts.

RBI infuses Rs 82,650 crore into Banking System via VRR Auction

On 10th March 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) infused liquidity amounting to Rs 82,650 crore into the banking system through a 14-day Variable Rate Repo (VRR) auction.  Under the VRR auction, Banks borrowed Rs 82,650 crore against the announced Rs 1 lakh crore (USD 12.19 billion)at a weighted average rate of 6.53%.

  • In the bi-monthly monetary policy review, on February 8, 2023, Shaktikanta Das, RBI Governor, noted that the RBI would be modulated by the scheduled redemption of LTRO (long-term repo operation) and TLTRO (Targeted LTRO) funds from February to April 2023.

Padma Shri Awardee & Renowned Hindi Writer Dr Gyan Chaturvedi wins 32nd Vyas Samman, 2022Gyan Chaturvedi to be awarded Vyas Samman 2022 for ‘Pagalkhana’Pagalkhana, a satirical Hindi novel authored by Dr Gyan Chaturvedi, a renowned Hindi Writer and Padma Shri Awardee (2015), has been selected for the 32nd Vyas Samman (2022).

  • The book was published by Rajkamal Prakashan in 2018.

The Jury of Vyas Samman 2022: 
i. The selection committee headed by eminent litterateur Prof Ramji Tiwari chose  Dr Chaturvedi’s Pagalkhana (mental asylum) as the winner of Vyas Samman 2022.
ii. The works published during 2012-2021 were considered for the Vyas Samman 2022.
About Vyas Samman Award:
i. Vyas Samman award is given annually to an outstanding Hindi literary work by an Indian citizen published during the last 10 years.

  • It carries a cash prize of Rs 4 lakh.

ii. The award was instituted by the KK Birla Foundation in 1991.
About Pagalkhana:

About Dr Gyan Chaturvedi:
i. Dr Gyan Chaturvedi was born on 2nd August 1952 in Mauranipur, Jhansi district, Uttar Pradesh (UP).
ii. He did advanced training in cardiology and joined the hospital at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), where he served for over 30 years until his retirement.
iii. He is an Indian satirist in the Hindi Language known for his satirical novels “Baramasi” and “Narak Yathra”. He started writing in his 70s with his 1st published work, Dharmayug.
iv. He published many books such as “Ham Na Marab”, “Khamosh Nange Hamam Mein Hain”, “Marichika”, “Alag” and “Pratyansha”.
Awards:
i. Dr Gyan Chaturvedi was honoured with Padma Shri in 2015 for Literature and Education (Madhya Pradesh) by the Government of India.
ii. He was the recipient of many awards such as Sharad Joshi Samman (2004-2005) from the Government of Madhya Pradesh, the Delhi Academy Award and the Indu Sharma Katha Samman (2002).

Life Insurance Corporation appoints Tablesh Pandey as Managing Director

On 14th March 2023, the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India, a public sector life insurance company, elevated Tablesh Pandey, the Executive Director of LIC, to the position of Managing Director (MD) of the LIC, with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the office on or after 1st April 2023.

  • Tablesh Pandey will replace the current Managing Director Bishnu Charan Patnaik.

Note: Currently, the LIC has 4 Managing Directors. The other 3 Managing Directors are M Jagannath, Siddhartha Mohanty (Interim Chairman), and Mini Ipe
Additional info:
i. On 13th March 2023, LIC appointed, M Jagannath, Zonal Manager (In-Charge), South Central Zone, Hyderabad, Telangana, as its new Managing Director, with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the office and upto the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

  • He took charge of the position of MD of LIC on 13th March 2023 replacing Raj Kumar, who was set to retire on 31st January 2023 and got a one-year extension.

ii. Additionally, LIC appointed Siddhartha Mohanty as the interim Chairman for three months with effect from 14th March 2023.

Newly discovered comet arriving in 2024 Night sky could be brighter than recent ‘Green Comet’

A comet called C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) that is expected to be brighter than the recently observed C/2022 E3 (ZTF), also known as the “green comet,” which the entire world watched on February 1st, 2023, may be visible in the night sky in 2024.

  • The comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS), which was named after its founding place, was discovered on 22nd February 2023 by astronomers at the Tsuchinshan Observatory in China and the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in South Africa.
  • C/2023 A3 is currently about 680 million miles (1.09 billion kilometres) from Earth and will make its nearest approach to the Sun, also called its perihelion, on 28 September 2024.
  • Its closest approach to Earth will occur on 13th October 2024.
  • In addition to becoming brighter as it approaches the sun, C/2023 A3 may eventually attain a magnitude of 5, matching Venus’ magnitude of -4.7.

Note: “Green Comet” visited the Earth after a period of 50,000 years and illuminated the night sky as it passed.

India clinch Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 and qualify for WTC finalIndia clinch Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 and qualify for WTC finali.India has clinched the four-match Test series of India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023 by 2-1 for the record 11th time. With this, India booked their place into the final of the World Test Championship.
ii.The fourth and final BGT Test held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat was concluded in a draw.
iii.Indian Team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the second fastest bowler to take 450 Test wickets in 89 matches in terms of Tests played. He has followed Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan who achieved this landmark in 80 matches.

It is an International Test cricket series played between India and Australia.
The series is named after distinguished former captains and cricket legends, Australia’s Allan Border and India’s Sunil Gavaskar. It is played via the International Cricket Council’s future tours.

VP Jagdeep Dhankhar releases Dr Karan Singh’s book on “Mundaka Upanishad”

On 9th March 2023, Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Vice President (VP) of India, released the book titled “Mundaka Upanishad: The Bridge to Immortality” which was originally authored by former Member of Parliament (MP) Dr Karan Singh and published by Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan in 1987.
The current edition contains the Hindi translation of Dr Karan Singh’s texts by Dr Kamal Kishor Mishra who has also transliterated the Sanskrit text in accordance with international standards.

  • The book presents 6 Ancient manuscripts with Bhasya, Bhasya-tippana and Dipika- Sanskrit Commentaries by Sabjaracharya and Narayana Pandita in old and new Kasmiri Devanagari script.

Karan Singh, an Indian politician and philosopher, was the Prince Rajpratinidhi (regent) of Jammu and Kashmir till 1952.

26th International Day of Action for Rivers – 14th March 2023International Day of Action for RiversInternational Day of Action for Rivers is annually observed across the globe on March 14 to raise awareness about how important rivers are to our daily lives and seek to spread awareness about unequal access to clean water and the increasing pollution of freshwater habitats like rivers as a result of blatant human activity.

  • 14th March 2023 marks the celebration of the 26th anniversary of the International Day of Action for Rivers.

i. International Day of Action against Dams, for Rivers, Water, and Life was adopted by the participants of the 1st International Meeting of People Affected by Dams held in March 1997 in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil, hosted by the Movement of Dam Affected Peoples from Brazil (MAB).
ii. Representatives from 20 countries including Taiwan, Brazil, Argentina, Thailand, Russia, France, Switzerland, and the United States decided that the International Day of Action would fall on 14 March (Brazil’s Day of Action Against Large Dams).
iii. According to International Rivers, a global non-profit organisation, the 1st International Day of Action for Rivers was observed on 14th March 1998.

Govt presents Rs.1.18 lakh crores Budget for UT of J&K for 2023-24 in Lok SabhaGovernment presents a budget of Rs.1,18,500 croresOn 13th March 2023, Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister of Finance, Government of India, presented a Rs 1,18,500 crore budget for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir for 2023-2024 in the Lok Sabha.

  • Pankaj Chaudhary, Union Minister of State(MoS) for Finance, tabled the budget for the UT of J&K.

Note:
The budget of J&K is required to be presented and approved by the Parliament As there is no legislature in J&K currently.
Key Points:
i.The total budget estimates for fiscal 2023-2024 is Rs 1,18,500 crore including the developmental expenditure of Rs 41,491 crore. The capital component of the budget of J&K has increased substantially.
ii.The expected revenue receipts are Rs 1,06,061 crore whereas revenue expenditure was expected to be Rs 77,009 crore. The capital expenditure is expected to the tune of Rs 29,052 crore.
