The “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”, the founder of the Missionaries of Charity and a wonderful human being as known to the world, Mother Teresa is set to attain sainthood on September 4, as confirmed by Pope Francis.
- Her canonization was just a second miracle away, which was confirmed in December 2015.
The Life Of The Great Soul
- Born as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in August 1910 in Macedonia, Sister Teresa after spending eighteen years in her homeland turned to Ireland and India where she spent most of her lives.
- Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 and spent 45 years serving the poor, the sick, the orphaned, and the dying on the streets of Kolkata.
- In 2002, the Vatican officially recognised a miracle she was said to have carried out after her death, namely the 1998 healing of a Bengali tribal woman, Monika Besra, who was suffering from an abdominal tumour. The traditional canonisation procedure requires at least two miracles
- She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in a fast-tracked process in 2003
- The second one was performed in Brazil, where a person had been healed miraculously as a result of her earlier prayers
- She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her dedication to the lives of the poorest of the poor and the society at large.
- She died at the age of 87 in Kolkata in 1997
