On May 25, 2020, The state government of Uttar Pradesh (UP), which is continuously bringing back the migrant workers from other states, has now taken a big decision for them. It has decided to set up a ‘Migration Commission’ to provide employment and social security to over 23 lakh migrant workers in the state.
- A framework will be made for setting up of the commission to give employment to workers in the agriculture and dairy sector on a large scale based on the skill mapping.
Key Points:
i.The state has also made it clear that any state that wants them from UP has to seek its permission.
ii.The UP Chief Minister (CM) Yogi Adityanath has also instructed the officials that insurance should also be available to the migrant workers at the state level so that their lives can be secured & a scheme should be prepared so that they can get job security.
iii.The decision comes days after the state announced adding of migrants based on their skills in different category of jobs including the Centre’s flagship scheme, Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS).
iv.The UP CM also instructed to send a proposal to the Central Government for construction of housing under the Rs 20 lakh crore economic package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In this package, a plan to give a house for rent will also be included. This will make housing available to the needy at a lower rent.
