President Ram Nath Kovind appoints new Governors in four states

Ram Nath Kovind, President of India has appointed new governors for 4 states – Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Nagaland and Uttarakhand.

The following appointments will take effect from the date they assume changes in their respective offices.

Details of Appointment:

Punjab:

Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Tamil Nadu who has been holding the additional charge of Governor of Punjab has been appointed as regular Governor of Punjab.

About Banwarilal Purohit:

Banwarilal Purohit has served as a member of Parliament from Nagpur(3 times), twice as a member of the Indian National Congress(INC) and once as a member of BJP.

He has previously served as the governor of Assam and Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu:

Ravindra Narayan Ravi (RN Ravi), Governor of Nagaland has been appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

About RN Ravi:

RN Ravi is an IPS officer of the 1979 batch from Kerala Cadre.

He has served as the Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee in the Prime Minister’s Office(PMO).

Nagaland:

Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam, has been given additional charge to discharge the functions of the Governor of Nagaland in addition to his duties until regular arrangements are made.

About Prof. Jagdish Mukhi:

He has served as the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands(2016-2017).

He has also served as the Minister of Finance, Planning excise & taxation and Higher education in the Delhi Government.

Uttarakhand:

Lieutenant General (retired) Gurmit Singh, former Deputy Chief of Army Staff has been appointed Governor of Uttarakhand.

Gurmit Singh will succeed Baby Rani Maurya, who resigned from her post as governor of Uttarakhand.

About Lt Gen(Rtd) Gurmit Singh:

Lt Gen Gurmit Singh retired from the Indian Army in February 2016 completing around 40 years of service.

He has served as the deputy chief of Army Staff, adjutant general and corps commander of strategic XV Corps, which overlooks the Line of Control(LoC) in Kashmir.
