Sri Lankan Elections 2015
In a recently held elections at Sri Lanka, President Mahinda Rajapaksa conceded defeat to his opposition challenger Maithripala Sirisena of United National Party after a bitterly fought presidential election. Rajapaksha have been ruling Sri Lanka for a decade. According to the critics, Rajapaksha’s government had become increasingly authoritarian and marred by nepotism and corruption.
Sirisena was a former health minister under Rajapaksha’s Party. He changed sides to become the opposition’s candidate and he has vowed to remove the deeply rooted corruption and also to bring constitutional reforms.
Sirisena has guaranteed to remove the executive presidency within 100 days and bring back the country to a Westminster-style parliamentary democracy where the police, the judiciary, and the civil service will be independent institutions.
I spoke to Shri Maithripala Sirisena & congratulated him. I congratulate the people of Sri Lanka on the peaceful & democratic poll process.
