Finland named world's happiest country for fifth straight year

As per the 10th United Nations’ World Happiness Report 2022, India’s rank has been improved by 3 spots to 136 out of 146 countries from 139 in 2021 with a score of 3.777.

  • For the 5th year in a row, Finland continues to occupy the top spot being the happiest country in the world.
  • Afghanistan was ranked as the unhappiest nation, followed by Lebanon, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Botswana.

  • The top 5 rankings were occupied by Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The US and UK were ranked 16th and 17th respectively. France improved to 20th rank, which is its highest ranking yet.

Key Facts : 

i.Worry and stress have increased by 8 percent in 2020 and 4 percent in 2021 compared with pre-pandemic levels.

ii.The report stated strong increases in anxiety and sadness in 18 countries but a fall in feelings of anger.

iii.During the COVID-19, social lives moved online to a larger extent than ever before.

iv.Global happiness: As per the report for over the 10 years the biggest gains in happiness have taken place in Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, and the biggest declines in Lebanon, Venezuela and Afghanistan.

Note – Bhutan was not included in the world happiness report 2022.

About the World Happiness Report:

i.It is a publication of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, powered by the Gallup World Poll data and the report of the year 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the World Happiness Report.

ii.It is the ranking of happiness that assigns a score on a scale of 0-10, on an average of data over a three-year-period of 2019-2021.

iii.It uses global survey data to report how people evaluate their own lives in more than 150 countries worldwide (146 in 2022) on 6 factors such as levels of GDP, life expectancy, generosity, social support, freedom, and corruption.

iv.The Report is supported by The Ernesto Illy Foundation, illycaffè, Davines Group, Unilever’s largest ice cream brand Wall’s, The Blue Chip Foundation, The William, Jeff, and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation, The Happier Way Foundation, and The Regenerative Society Foundation.
