According to the ‘India TB Report 2022 – Coming Together to End TB Altogether’, India has recorded a 19% increase in Tuberculosis(TB) cases in 2021 over 2020 & as per ‘National TB Prevalence Survey in India 2019-2021’ Report, Delhi has topped the TB Prevalence in India(among the population aged above 15 years and among all age groups) with 534 cases per 1 lakh population and 747 per 1 Lakh population (highest in India) respectively.

The report was released by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya during the “STEP Up to End TB 2022” Summit organised on the occasion of World TB Day 2022. 

Highlights of India TB Report 2022:

More than 19.3 lakh new and relapsed TB patients were notified in 2021 against the 16.3 lakh in 2020. 

In 2020, deaths due to TB have increased to 4.93 lakh (excluding the HIV patients who died due to TB). In 2020, deaths due to TB have increased by 13%, compared to 2019.

Between 2019 and 2020, the mortality due to all forms of TB has increased by 11%.

India aims to eliminate TB by 2025 according to the National Strategic Plan for Elimination of Tuberculosis (NSP 2017- 25) and 18 States have committed to Ending TB by 2025 by formally implementing State-specific Strategic Plans.

According to the Global TB Report 2021, the estimated incidence of all forms of TB in India for 2020 was 188 per 1 lakh population.

The National TB Prevalence Survey in India 2019-2021:

The summary report of the National TB Prevalence Survey in India 2019-2021 states that around 64% of the surveyed symptomatic population did not seek any healthcare services between 2019 and 2021. 

Note: Previously in India, a National TB Prevalence Survey was done in 1955-1958.The survey was conducted after six decades.

  • The Prevalence was lowest in Kerala with 115 per lakh population.
  • The 2019-2021 survey showed that in India cases of confirmed pulmonary TB cases for those above 15 years were 316 per lakh population.
