Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi visited Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) on the 20th and 21st of June 2024 and inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects.
- He also participated in the ‘Empowering Youth, Transforming J&K’ event at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, J&K.
- He also launched the Competitiveness Improvement in Agriculture and Allied Sectors Project (JKCIP).
PM Addresses ‘Empowering Youth, Transforming J&K’ program in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir
On 20th June 2024, PM Modi attended the ‘Empowering Youth, Transforming J&K’ event at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar. The event aimed to show the progress and to inspire the young achievers of J&K.
i. During the event, he also inquired into the stalls and interacted with young achievers of J&K.
PM laid Foundation Stone & Launched 84 Major Developmental Projects in J&K
i.PM Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated 84 major developmental projects valued at more than Rs. 1,500 crores.
- These projects are related to road infrastructure, water supply schemes, and infrastructure in higher education etc.
ii.Along with the development projects, the PM also laid the foundation stone for projects like the upgradation of the Chenani-Patnitop-Nashri Section, the development of Industrial Estates and the construction of six Government Degree Colleges.
Launches Competitiveness Improvement in Agriculture and Allied Sectors (JKCIP) Project
i.The Prime Minister launched the Competitiveness Improvement in Agriculture & Allied Sectors (JKCIP) Project, worth Rs. 1,800 crores.
ii.This project will be executed in 90 Blocks in 20 districts of J&K, benefiting 300,000 households and reaching 15 lakh beneficiaries.
iii.Appointment letters to more than 2,000 individuals were distributed and were appointed to government service.
About JKCIP Project:
i.The Competitiveness Improvement of Agriculture and Allied Sectors Project in Jammu and Kashmir (JKCIP) is a partnership between the United Nations (UN) International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of J&K in India to enhance the competitiveness and climate resilience of small-scale farmers.
ii. IFAD is contributing USD 100 million to this USD 217.2 million programme, of which USD 50.77 million will be devoted to climate action.
iii.Government of J&K is contributing USD 26.4 million. Private banks will contribute USD 20.8 million, while another USD 20.7 million will come from the private sector. Project participants will add USD 45.8 million of their funds.
iv.The project will encourage the people to introduce good agricultural practices, promoting diversification into high-value crops best suitable to the region’s climate, and expanding the niche crop and horticulture crop cultivation areas.
v.JKCIP will help to develop functional and inclusive farmer-producer organizations, that will increase the productivity and production of niche and horticultural crops, providing better prices to farmers and improving the resilience of vulnerable groups.
vi.It will also improve the growth of agri-business startups with a special focus on young women entrepreneurs. Livelihood options will be diversified by helping to improve animal breeding practices and get better prices for wool
International Day of Yoga
i.PM Modi headed the 10th International Yoga Day Celebrations at SKICC, Srinagar on 21st June, 2024.
ii.Since 2015, the Prime Minister has led the International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations at various locations, including Kartavya Path in Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, Lucknow, Mysuru and even the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
About the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD):
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations, was formed to finance agricultural development projects, primarily for food production in developing countries.
IFAD was set up as an international financial institution in 1977.
