On December 19, 2019 The National Rail Transport Institute(NRTI), deemed to be a university under the Ministry of Railways (MoR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Birmingham, (England) in New Delhi. The MoU was to set up NRTI’s 1st Centre of Excellence for Next Generation Transportation Systems.Centre of Excellence for NextGen Transport Systems:
i.MoU signing:The MoU was signed by Mr. Vinod Kumar Yadav, Chairman of the Railway Board and Chancellor of NRTI and Professor Clive Roberts, Head of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) at the University of Birmingham.
ii.IR-Founding partner: Indian Railways(IR) is a founding partner of this centre. As a founding partner, IR will provide data, professional expertise, spare equipment and other available resources directly or through its Centralised Training Institutes and research organisations.
iii.Centre function:Â
- The centre while developing, would invite partnerships from other industry and academic organisations.
- Rail and Transportation sector in India will be promoted by the centre. The promotions include offering post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral programmes, training programmes, undertaking joint research projects etc.
- Event organisation: The centre will also involve in organising knowledge events, conferences, workshops in the transportation sector, accessible to industry and academia.
iv.The University of Birmingham’s relationship with India began in 1909, with the first cohort of Indian students attending the University to study for degrees in Mining and Commerce.
