Indian Space Research Organization‘s (ISRO) Mars Orbiter Mission (MoM) or Mangalyaan Team has won the United States based 2015 Space Pioneer Award in the science and engineering category. The award is given by National Space Society (NSS), an educational and scientific group.
The award comprises a silvery pewter Moon globe cast by the Baker Art Foundry in California, from a sculpture created by Don Davis, an astronomical artist.
According to the NSS, the India’s Mangalyaan achieved two significant mission firsts.
- An Indian spacecraft that has entered the Mars orbit on the very first attempt and that no other country has ever done this.
- The spacecraft is in an elliptical orbit with a high apoapsis, and also it has a high resolution camera capable of taking full-disk colour imagery of Mars.
