BiPAP Non Invasive Ventilator SwasthVayuOn 11th May 2020, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research – National Aerospace Laboratories(CSIR-NAL), Bengaluru develops a cost effective, easy to use, compact, non-invasive Bi level Positive Airway Pressure(BiPAP) ventilator ‘Swasth Vayu’ in 36 days to treat the patients tested positive for COVID-19.

Key Points:

i.A team of technocrats and medical practitioners headed by Dr. CM Ananda, Head Electronics Department, Dr Amarnarayan D, Chief Medical Officer – NAL, Dr. Vire Sardana – Respiratory Physiologist CSIR-IGIB worked on developing the ‘Swasth Vayu’

ii.‘Swasth Vayu’ is a microcontroller-based precise closed-loop adaptive control system with a built-in biocompatible ‘3D printed manifold and coupler’ with Highly Efficient Particulate Air Filter(HEPA) filter which helps to control the spread of novel coronavirus.

iii.The features of ‘Swasth Vayu’ are spontaneous, CPAP, Timed, AUTO BIPAP modes with a facility to externally connect Oxygen concentrator or Enrichment unit.

iv.The machine can be used without specialized nursing, can be configured with most of the other components, cost effective and compact.

v.The machine can be used in COVID-19 Wards, makeshift hospitals, dispensaries and home to treat the COVID-19 patients.

vi.The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibrating Laboratories (NABL) accredited agencies certified the system for safety and performance and NAL Health Centre tested the stringent biomedical tests and beta clinical trials for the system.
