The Athletics Federation of India(AFI) has declared the 7th August of every year, starting from 2022, as the National Javelin Throw Day. The day will commemorate the feat of Indian athlete(javelin) Neeraj Chopra, who won the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
He became the first Indian athlete in the country’s independent history to win an athletics medal at the Olympics.
About National Javelin Throw Day:
Objective: to promote javelin throw across India.
i.The first National Javelin Throw Day will be celebrated on 7th August 2022.
ii.The AFI affiliated units will observe the day by organising state-level javelin competitions.
Facts about Neeraj Chopra:
i.Neeraj Chopra (23 years old) won the gold medal in Men’s javelin throw at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic on 7th August 2021.
ii.He is the 2nd Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal after Abhinav Bindra (Shooter) who won the gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
He is a Subedar in the Indian Army and enrolled in 4 Rajputana Rifles in 2016.
