Thousands of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles have came to the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Kendrapara district of Odisha. It is happy to note that more than 80,000 eggs have been laid the turtles in the first two days. Gahirmatha, which is situated 170 km from Bhubaneswar, is one of the world’s major and largest turtle nesting sites.
The wind blowing during this month is highly favorable for the Olive Ridley sea turtles, as it propels them to come ashore for nesting along some beaches of Odisha (mainly Babubali Island). The Indian Coast Guard and the officials from Forest Department have set up many camps to guard the turtles and prevent the entry of fishing vessels.
Other than Babubali island, the prominent sites for nesting includes Agarnasi, Pentha, Satabhay, and Barunei.
