Over 50 animal species have been judged as critically endangered and 310 asendangered out of 96, 000 animal species present in India according to the studies taken by Zoological Survey of India.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Survey:
- Critically endangered is the highest risk category assigned by the Nature Conservation body.
- Switzerland based organisation has assessed 18 species of amphibians, 14 varieties of fish, 13 birds and 10 mammals as critically endangered and 310 species as endangered, including 69 fish, 38 mammals and 32 amphibians.
- Botanical Survey of India (BSI) Survey says a total of 19,156 species of vascular plants, 1,236 species belong to different threatened categories like critically endangered, endangered
For the conservation of threatened species, the government has established primarily to 
cover habitats of threatened mega fauna such as tiger, rhino, elephant and others.
- 730 Protected Areas,
- 103 national parks,
- 535 wildlife sanctuaries,
- 26 community reserves
- 66 conservation reserves,
- 18 biosphere reserves and nine of the in India are part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO
Conditions for Species considered critically endangered:
- Occurring over less than 100 km²: Existing at just one location, Decline in occurrence, area of occupancy, area/extent/quality of habitat, number of locations/subpopulations, Extreme fluctuations in extent of occurrence, area of occupancy.
- As above, but less than 10 km² (used to show differing levels of severity).
- Declining population of less than 250 Matured individuals and either:A decline of 25% over 3-Generation/10Year whichever is longer and Extreme fluctuations.
- Numbers less than 50 Matured individuals.
- At least 50% chance of going Extinct in the Wild over 3-Generation/10Year whichever is longer.
