The first machine harvestable chickpea variety, NBeG 47 has been released in Andhra Pradesh suitable for the state’s variable climate.
- The 2.25 tons of NbeG 47 took just 75 minutes for harvesting by the standard machinery as compared to erstwhile process of harvesting chickpea that takes three days.
- NbeG 47 was developed by Dr Veera Jayalakshmi, Principal Scientist (Chickpea Breeding) with a support from International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid-Tropics (ICRISAT).
Benefits of NbeG 47
- The total mechanization of harvesting is cost effective and quicker.
- It will address the issue of labour shortage on farms and reduce drudgery.
- Machine harvesting is better for the health of laborers, especially women, as handling the crop causes painful dermatitis due to its high acid content.
- It would reduce the risk of the ripened crop’s exposure to untimely rain and other extreme weather conditions.
More research efforts are underway to develop machine harvestable chickpea varieties suited for other parts of India like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
