The National Task Force for the novel coronavirus constituted by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has recommended the use of hydroxychloroquine for healthcare workers or persons staying with and caring for positive COVID-19 patients. This protocol has been approved by the Drug Controller General of India (DGCI), Dr. V. G. Somani.
- The protocol has mandated that hydroxychloroquine is to be taken only for prophylaxis or prevention. Its use is restricted for emergency situations.
- This drug has to be given only on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner.
- It is also mandated that it should not be advised for children below 15 years of age.
Key Points:
-The public health measures such as using masks, frequent washing of hands and keeping a distance of at least one metre from the patient should be continued while consuming this drug.
-If the asymptomatic(showing no symptoms) healthcare worker or caregiver becomes symptomatic while on prophylaxis, he/she should immediately contact the health facility, get tested as per national guidelines and follow the standard treatment procedure.
Dose: Asymptomatic healthcare workers involved in the care of suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19: 400 mg twice a day on Day 1, followed by 400 mg once weekly for next 7 weeks; to be taken with meals • Asymptomatic household contacts of laboratory-confirmed cases: 400 mg twice a day on Day 1, followed by 400 mg once weekly for next 3 weeks; to be taken with meals.
What is Hydroxychloroquine and how it is useful to prevent COVID-19?
Basically, Hydroxychloroquine is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria, specifically chloroquine-sensitive malaria.But, a study in the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal in the United States (US) found that it was effective against the novel coronavirus.
- Apart from India, Jordan also authorized its physicians to use hydroxychloroquine along with an antiviral medicine as a treatment for the advanced stage of COVID-19.
