World Homeopathy DayWorld Homeopathy (or homoeopathy) Day is annually observed across the globe on April 10 to honour homoeopathy and its contribution to treating people across the globe. The day also commemorates the birth anniversary of German physician Dr Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homeopathy.

  • 10th April 2023 marks the 268th birth anniversary of Dr Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann.

World Homeopathy Awareness Week is observed from 10 April to 16 April 2023.

Aim:

The day aims to create awareness about the effectiveness of homoeopathy in treating various health conditions.

About Dr Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann:

i. Dr Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann was born on 10th April 1755 in Meissen, Germany.

ii. He translated the lectures of William Cullen, also called the Scottish Hippocrates, on the Materia Medica into German in 1790.

iii. This observation led him to propose the theory of “likes are cured by likes,” similia similibus curantur; that is, diseases are cured (or should be treated) by medications that generate symptoms comparable to the ailments in healthy people.

Events:

i. Scientific Convention on the WHD 2023:

Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) under the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) has organised a flag-off event, a scientific convention, on the occasion of the World Homoeopathy Day on 10th April 2023 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • The theme of this scientific convention for 2023 is “Homoeoparivar- Sarvajan Swasthya, One Health, One Family”.
  • On this occasion, one documentary, one portal and 8 books of CCRH was released.
  • The Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) were exchanged between CCRH & various homoeopathic colleges and also between CCRH & Directorate of Homoeopathy, Government of Kerala.

The scientific convention was inaugurated by Jagdeep Dhankhar, Vice President of India.

Homoeopathy:

i. Homoeopathy is a Greek word, ‘Homeo’ and ‘pathos’ which refer to similarities and suffering.

ii. It is a therapeutic system of medicine based on the principle “Similia Similibus Curentur,” which means “let likes be treated by likes.”

iii. It is a method of treatment for curing the patient by medicines that possess the power of producing similar symptoms in a healthy human being simulating the natural disease, which it can cure in the diseased person.

Homeopathy in India:

i. Homoeopathy, which was introduced in India approximately two centuries ago, is an important component of India’s pluralistic healthcare system.

ii. The Government of India has made sustained efforts for the growth and development of Homoeopathy and other traditional systems of medicine including Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Sowa Rigpa (AYUSH).

iii. Homoeopathic healthcare is offered by 235 hospitals and 8117 dispensaries run by state and local governments, the Central Government Health Scheme, the Labor Ministry and the Railway Ministry.

Current Global Scenario of Homeopathy:

i. Homoeopathy is currently used in over 80 countries.

ii. It has legal recognition as an individual system of medicine in 42 countries and is recognized as a part of complementary and alternative medicine in 28 countries.

iii. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Homeopathy is one of the most commonly used forms of Traditional & Complementary Medicine (T&CM).
