The United Nations (UN) World Creativity and Innovation Day (WCID) is annually observed across the globe on 21 April to raise awareness about the role of creativity and innovation in all aspects of human development.
- Every year, WCID champions the importance of a creative mindset in advancing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.
Purpose of the Day:
i.WCID encourages individuals to leverage their creativity for societal and personal betterment.
ii.It emphasises the significance of innovative thinking in fostering sustainability and improving quality of life.
Background:
i.Citizens and organisations in more than 50 countries across the world observe 21 April of every year as World Creativity and Innovation Day. WCID was first commemorated on 21 April 2002.
ii.On 27 April 2017, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/71/284 and proclaimed the 21 April of every year as World Creativity and Innovation Day.
iii.The 1st UN-recognised WCID was observed on 21st April 2018.
Reshaping Policies for Creativity:
i.According to the 3rd edition of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Global Report, ” Re|Shaping Policies for Creativity – Addressing Culture as a global public good (2022):”
- Culture and creativity account for 3.1% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 6.2% of employment.
- Exports of cultural goods and services doubled in value, but the creative economy remains vulnerable.
ii.The report offers data and policy recommendations for fostering creative ecosystems that contribute to a sustainable world by 2030 and beyond.
Green Innovation for Sustainable Future:
Green technologies are crucial for achieving SDGs by reducing carbon footprints.
- It offers economic opportunities but requires decisive action, especially in developing countries.
World Creativity & Innovation Week (WCIW):
i.WCIW is a week-long celebration of creativity and innovation that takes place annually across the globe from April 15 to 21.
ii.The observance begins with the birth anniversary of Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci (April 15) (1452-1519) and ends on WCID (April 21), which is dedicated to the 17 SDGs.
iii.WCIW 2024 was observed from 15 to 21 April 2024.
