The United Nations(UN) Day is annually observed across the globe on 24th October to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations in 1945.
24th October 2021 marks the 76th Anniversary of the United Nations.
Background:
i.The UN officially came into existence on 24th October 1945, when the United Nations Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and most other signatories.
ii.The UNGA adopted the resolution A/RES/168 in 1947 and declared the 24th October of every year as the United Nations Day.
UN Day concert 2021:
i.The UN day annual concert 2021 was conducted in a hybrid format with part live and part pre-recorded performances at the General Assembly Hall in the UN Headquarters in New York.
ii.The concert was held on 21st October 2021 under the theme “Building Back Together for Peace and Prosperity”.
iii.The concert was sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations.
UN Day at Expo 2020 Dubai:
i.Expo 2020 Dubai celebrated the United Nations Day as an Honor Day with several official events.
ii.The events include an official ceremony at the Al Wasl Dome and cultural performance by the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO), a unique group of young musicians in the UAE and the Arab world.
#TheWorldWeWant exhibit:
i.The UN will also open selected photos from the exhibit of #TheWorldWeWant, curated from the photo contest hosted by mobile app Agora to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations(24th October 2020).
ii.The physical exhibit will be on display at the Opportunity Pavilion plaza.
History of UN:
i.The name “United Nations”, coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
ii.It was 1st used in the Declaration of the United Nations (1 January 1942), during the Second World War.
Note:
The main bodies of the UN: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat.
UN Emblem:
i.The original design of the UN was created by a team of designers led by Oliver Lincoln Lundquist during the UN Conference on International Organization in 1945.
i.It consists of a world map in an azimuthal equidistant projection centred on the North Pole inscribed in a wreath of crossed conventionalized branches of the olive tree, in gold on a field of smoke-blue with all water areas in white.
ii.The world map projection extends to 60 degrees south latitude and includes five concentric circles.
iii.The “UN blue” colour was also chosen and became a part of the visual identity of the UN.
UN Flag:
The UNGA adopted a resolution A/RES/167 on 20th October 1947 which stated that the flag of the UN shall be the official emblem centred on a light blue ground.
