India celebrates National Milk Day on 26th of November to commemorate the birthday of the legend Dr. Verghese Kurien.
Verghese Kurien is known as the Father of White Revolution and also known as the Milkman of India. His project called ‘Operation Flood’ was the world’s biggest agricultural development programme. Only because of his initiative, India became the largest milk producer in the world.
Kurien served as the chairman of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1965. From 2006 to 2011, he also served as the first Chancellor of the University of Allahabad.
AMUL, one of the leading milk producers in the country founded by Kurien.
AMUL is the milk and milk product brand marketed by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF).
According to the National Diary Development Board (NDDB), India produced 140 million tones (MT) of milk during 2013-14.
Among states, Uttar Pradesh continued to remain the leading milk producer, followed by Rajasthan and Gujarat.
