The National Plastic Surgery Day, annually observed on 15th July in India has been adopted as the World Plastic Surgery Day by the leaders of Plastic surgery specialist bodies across the globe.

The announcement of the world Plastic Surgery day was made by the Association of Plastic Surgeons in India (APSI).

  • The 15th July 2021 will be observed as the first-ever World Plastic Surgery Day. 
  • Starting from 2021, the 15th July of every year will be observed as World Plastic Surgery Day. 

Background:

i.The concept of National Plastic Surgery day was discussed at the World Council of Leaders, a gathering of the Presidents of Plastic Surgery Associations from across the globe organised by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

ii.Dr Rakesh K. Khazanchi, the current President of APSI, highlighted the success of the National Plastic Surgery Day in India following which the decision to observe the 15th July of every year as World Plastic Surgery Day was approved by all the presidents from across the globe.

National Plastic Surgery Day:

The National Plastic Surgery Day has been annually observed across India on 15th July to create awareness about the importance of plastic surgery and educate the general people about the scope of Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons.

  • The idea of the celebration of National Plastic Surgery Day on 15th July was first launched by Dr S Raja Sabapathy, the President of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India(APSI) in 2011.
  • The ‘National Plastic Surgery Day’ was first observed on 15th July 2011. 

Plastic surgery:

i.Plastic surgery originated from India and Sushruta, or Suśruta, an ancient Indian Physician and Surgeon is known as the “Father of Indian Surgery” and “Father of Plastic Surgery”.

ii.The word ‘plastic’ derived from the Greek word ‘Plastikos’ which means ’To Mould or To Form’, gave rise to the term plastic surgery.

iii.Plastic surgery is not defined by any anatomic area, or organ system or patient age group, it deals with everything.

iv.Plastic surgery is divided into sub-specialities like Hand surgery, Microsurgery, Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric plastic surgery and Cosmetic surgery.
