In May 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge, IC) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science & Technology (MoS&T) unveiled the ‘Battery Aadhaar Initiative’ at the Battery Summit 2025 in New Delhi, Delhi, to enhance traceability, safety, efficiency, and sustainability in India’s battery ecosystem.

  • The Battery Summit 2025, held under the theme “Addressing Challenges, Driving Innovation and Scaling Solutions,” emphasized India’s commitment to clean energy.
  • The World Resources Institute India (WRI India), headquartered in New Delhi, hosted the Battery Summit in collaboration with National Institution for Transforming India(NITI) Aayog, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Battery360 Alliance.

About Battery Aadhaar Initiative:

i.The ‘Battery Aadhaar’ technology was developed by Tata Elxsi Limited, headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, in collaboration with prominent consortium partners including Tata Motors Limited (Mumbai, Maharashtra), Tata AutoComp Systems Limited (Pune, Maharashtra), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur (West Bengal), LOHUM Cleantech (Noida), NUNAM Technologies (Bengaluru), and Oorja Energy (Hyderabad).

ii.Tata Elxsi’s MOBIUS+ platform forms the backbone of this initiative, utilizing blockchain technology to enable comprehensive traceability and simplify automated compliance reporting processes.

iii. This project is a component of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) initiative titled ‘Electrifying Mobility in Cities: Investing in the Transformation to Electric Mobility in India,’ aimed at facilitating India’s transition to sustainable e-mobility.

iv.The Battery Aadhaar initiative supports India’s broader goals of achieving 30% electric vehicle penetration by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.

Key Features:

i.Unique Digital Identity: Battery Aadhaar assigns a unique 16-digit digital identity to each battery pack, capturing critical information such as the manufacturing date and location, battery chemistry and capacity, material composition including lithium content and electrode materials, usage history and lifecycle details, as well as end-of-life status and recycling information.

ii.Critical Parameter Monitoring: Tracks thermal events, charge-discharge cycles, and end-of-life status to facilitate predictive maintenance and efficient recycling.

iii.Regulatory Safeguards: Acts as a tool to curb counterfeit products, boost consumer confidence, and support circular economy initiatives.

iv.System Integration: Synergizes with Battery Management Systems (BMS), Artificial Intelligence (AI) diagnostics, and national Electric Vehicle (EV) databases to build a battery intelligence ecosystem.
