Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed every year on the third Monday of January. It is an American Holiday which marks the birthday of MLK, which is around the time of King’s birthday, January 15. MLK was greatly influenced by Mahtma Gandhiji and King was the chief spokesman for non-violent activism in the civil rights movement. King’s civil rights movement successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law.

Martin Luther King was greatly inspired by Gandhi and he visited India in 1959. He adopted Gandhiji’s method of non-violent resistance.

MLK led the historical 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Reason for this boycott – African American woman Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to surrender her seat to a white person.  

MLK was conferred with Nobel Peace Prize (1964), Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977) posthumous), and Congressional Gold Medal (2004).

MLK was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee.
