International Museum DayThe International Museum Day is annually observed across the globe on 18th May to create awareness on the importance of museums towards the development of society.

The day is annually organised by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Advisory Committee.

The day represents a unique moment for the international museum community.

The theme of the International Museum Day 2021 is “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine”.

Background:

i.The International Council of Museums (ICOM) created International Museum Day in 1977 to highlight the role of museums in the development of society on an international level.

ii.The annual theme of the International Museum Day is chosen by the ICOM.

NGMA launches Audio-Visual Guide App:

New Delhi based National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), announced the launch of the NGMA’s Audio-Visual Guide App. It was founded on 1954.

  • The app is an audio-visual guide for exploring the modern art treasures on display across galleries of the Museum.
  • It will be possible for museum viewers to listen to anecdotes and stories related to the treasured Indian modern art exhibited at the Gallery, on smart phone, anywhere, anytime.

Museums:

i.The Museum is an institution that has a collection of artefacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical or scientific importance.

ii.They play a major role in preserving the local culture.

iii.According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO), the number of museums across the world has increased from 22000 in 1975 to 95000 in 2020.
