Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) captained by Shreyas Iyer(Indian cricketer) has won the champions title of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) captained by Pat Cummins(Australian cricketer) by eight wickets in the finals held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamil Nadu(TN).
- This marks KKR’s 3rd IPL title. The team has previously won the title in 2012 and 2014 under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir.
- The finals between KKR and SRH lasted only 29 overs and became the shortest-ever IPL playoff game (without weather interruptions).
- Shreyas Iyer has become the 5th Indian captain after MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya to lead a team to victory in the IPL.

IPL is a franchise Twenty20(T20) cricket league annually held in India, organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI). The first edition of IPL was held in 2008.

Key Points:i.Virat Kohli (RCB) concluded the tournament as the highest run-scorer, with 741 runs in 15 matches, which includes a century and 5 fifties. He received the Orange Cap for most runs in the season.
- He became the only Indian to achieve the feat twice. He previously received the Orange cap in 2016.
ii.Harshal Patel (PBKS) won the Purple Cap after taking 24 wickets in 14 appearances . He became only the 2nd Indian bowler and 3rd bowler (overall) in the history of IPL to win the Purple Cap for the 2nd time. He previously won the Purple Cap in 2021 with RCB.
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar(for SRH in 2016 and 2017) and Dwayne Bravo (for CSK in 2013 and 2015) are the other players to have won the award twice.
iii.Sunil Narine(KKR) has become the first player to win the ‘Most Valuable Player'(MVP) award in the IPL thrice. Previously, He won the MVP award in 2012, his debut season in which he took 24 wickets and in 2018, where he took 17 wickets and scored 357 runs.
Virat Kohli becomes the first batsman to reach 8000 IPL runs
i.Virat Kohli (RCB) has become the first batsman to reach 8000 runs in IPL. He achieved the feat during the hist 252nd IPL match against RR at Narendra Modi Stadium, Gujarat on 22nd May 2024.
ii.Virat Kohli has scored the most runs in IPL (8004), which includes 8 centuries and 55 fifties. PBKS captain Shikhar Dhawan holds the 2nd place with 6769 runs in 222 matches followed by former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma with 6628 runs in 257 games.
iii.During IPL 2024, He also became the first Indian player to have two seasons with 700-plus runs. He previously scored 973 runs during the 2016 IPL.
iv.Kohli, the only player in history of IPL to play 16 seasons for one franchise — Royal Challengers Bangalore.
T20 Records achieved during IPL 2024:
Virat becomes 1st Indian to score 12000 runs in T20:
i.During the IPL 2024 match against RCB and CSK on 17th May 2024, Virat Kohli became the first Indian to score 12000 runs in T20 cricket.
ii.This 12000 runs includes those he scored RCB in the IPL and the now-defunct Champions League, for Delhi in domestic Twenty Over Cricket, and for India in T20 Internationals.
iii.With this, he became the 6th cricketer to achieve the feat after Chris Gayle, Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard, Alex Hales, and David Warner.
Note: Rohit Sharma is the next Indian on the list having scored 11156 runs in 426 matches, followed by Shikhar Dhawan, who has 9645 runs in 329 matches.
Yuzvendra Chahal becomes 1st Indian to complete 350 wickets in T20:
i.Indian leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (Rajasthan Royals) became the first Indian bowler to complete 350 wickets in T20 format. Out of the 350 wickets, 96 were taken for Team India.
- He also became the first bowler to achieve the 200 wickets mark in the history of IPL.
ii.He is also the fifth-highest wicket-taking spinner in the history of T20s after Rashid Khan (572), Sunil Narine (549), Imran Tahir (502) and Shakib Al Hasan (482).
iii.Dwayne Bravo is the leading wicket-taker in the T20 format of cricket with a total of 625 in 573 matches.
MS Dhoni becomes the 1st wicketkeeper to complete 300 dismissals in T20:
i.Mahendra Singh (MS) Dhoni (CKS) became the first wicketkeeper to reach the 300 dismissal mark in T20 format. He achieved the feat during IPL 2024 match against DC on 31st March 2024. The 300 dismissal includes 213 catches and 87 stumpings.
- Dinesh Karthik (RCB) stands 2nd with 274 dismissals(207 catches and 67 stumpings) followed by Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal with 274 dismissals (172 catches and 102 stumpings).
ii.During 2024 IPL, He also became the 1st Indian keeper to score 7,000 runs in T20 cricket.
Tilak Varma becomes the 2nd fastest Indian to achieve 1000 runs in IPL
Mumbai Indians’ batsman, Tilak Varma(21 years 166 days) became the 2nd fastest Indian to achieve the 1,000-run mark in his IPL career, after Sachin Tendulkar and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s joint record(31 innings). He completed 1,000 runs in 33 innings.
He has now become the 3rd youngest player to reach 1000 IPL runs, after Rishabh Pant (20 years) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (21 years 130 days).
Punjab Kings set a world record of highest successful run chase in T20
PBKS broke South Africa’s record to record the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket after scoring 262 runs during IPL 2024 match against KKR. In 2023, South Africa chased down West Indies’ 258-run score.
- PBKS also recorded their highest IPL total after scoring 232 against RCB in 2011.
Sunrisers Hyderabad sets a record of highest IPL total of all time
Sunrisers Hyderabad broke the record for the highest score in the Indian Premier League after scoring 277/3 against Mumbai Indians.
- The Sunrisers broke the record of RCB who had scored 263/5 against Pune Warriors India in 2013.
- This was the second-highest score in a men’s T20 and the highest in IPL.
Mumbai Indians make history by becoming the first team to win 150 T20 matches
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) made history after claiming their 150th win in T20 cricket (Super Over and tied matches).
- CSK is in 2nd place with 148 victories. CSK has played 253 T20 matches, winning 148 and losing 101.
- Indian team is in the 3rd place with 140 wins in 219 matches. excluding their four Super Over wins.
IPL Auction 2024 Expensive Player:
i.Mitchell Starc of Australia emerged as the most expensive player in the history of the IPL. He was bought by KKR for Rs 24.75 crore, breaking the record of Pat Cummins who was picked up for Rs 20.5 crore by SRH.
