India's milk production rises 5.29% to 221.06 mn tonnes in FY22According to the ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2022’, the 23rd series of annual publication of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAHD), India’s milk production increased to 221.06 million tonnes (MT) in the financial year 2021-22 (FY22) from 209.96 MT in FY21 registering an annual growth of 5.29%.

  • Union Minister Parshottam Rupala, MoFAHD, released the publication on March 15, 2023.
  • The publication provides data sets of production estimates of Major Livestock Products (MLPs) such as Milk, Egg, Meat, and Wool for the year FY22 based on the Integrated Sample Survey (ISS) conducted from March 1, 2021, to February 28, 2022.

Key Note – 

  • India has the world’s largest livestock population comprising 537 million.
  • India ranks 1st, 3rd and 8th in the world in terms of total milk, egg, and meat  production respectively.

Highlights of the Statistics Publication:

Milk:

i.Top 5 Milk producing States such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh together contribute 53.11% of India’s Milk production.

ii.The all-India average per capita availability of milk has increased from 333 grams (gm)/day in FY16 to 444 gm/day in FY22.

  • With 1271 gm/day, Punjab has the highest per capita availability of milk in India.

Egg:

i.India’s total egg production in FY22 was about 129.60 billion numbers registering a growth of 6.19% compared to FY21.

ii.The per-capita availability of eggs was increased from 65 eggs/annum in FY16 to 95 eggs/annum in FY22.

iii.The total egg production from commercial poultry is 109.93 billion numbers and backyard poultry are 19.67 billion numbers contributing 84.82% and 15.18% of the total production of egg respectively.

Meat:

i.The total meat production in India in FY22 was about 9.29 MT registering an annual growth of 5.62% compared to FY21.

ii.The per capita availability was increased from 5.51 kg/annum in FY16 to 6.82 Kg/Annum in FY22.

iii.The meat production from poultry is 4.78 MT, contributing about 51.44% of total meat production. The growth of poultry meat production in FY22 has increased by 6.86% over FY21.

Wool:

i.The total wool production in India in FY22 was about 33.13 million kgs registering a negative growth rate of 10.30% as compared to FY21.

ii.In FY22, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana reported Zero wool production due to the non-availability of the wool-producing breed.

The share of Livestock at constant prices in Agriculture Sector and total GVA (Gross Value Added) in FY21 was 30.13% and 4.9% respectively.

The Animal Husbandry Statistics (AHS) Division of DAHD is entrusted with the generation of Animal Husbandry Statistics through the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Livestock Census and Integrated Sample Survey”.
