Discovery of Potential Dwarf Planet 2017 OF201 Challenges Planet Nine Hypothesis
In May 2025, a team of scientists from the Institute for Advanced Study School of Natural Sciences, Princeton, New Jersey, United States of America (USA) discovered a new Trans-Neptunian Object (TNO), named 2017 OF201 located beyond the Kuiper Belt in the outer region of the solar system.

  • The discovery potentially challenges the existing Planet Nine theory proposed by earlier astronomers.
  • The discovery was made possible through the analysis of astronomical image databases, from the Victor M. Blanco Telescope in Chile and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii.

i.The newly identified object 2017 OF201 is approximately 700 kilometres (430 miles) in diameter and meets the criteria to be classified as a dwarf planet, making it three times smaller than Pluto.
ii.The object’s aphelion (farthest distance from the Sun) is over 1,600 Astronomical Units (AU), while the perihelion (closest distance to the Sun) is 44.5 AU, which is similar to Pluto’s orbit.
iii.The object takes around 25,000 Earth years to complete one orbit around the Sun and is visible to Earth for only 0.5% of its orbital time, i.e., roughly 100 years.
iv.The Planet Nine theory, introduced in 2016 by USA based California Institute of Technology (Caltech) astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown, suggests a massive planet (up to 10 times Earth’s mass) exists far beyond Neptune, influencing the orbits of icy bodies in the Kuiper Belt. However, the orbit of 2017 OF201 does not follow the clustered pattern predicted by the Planet Nine hypothesis, thereby challenging its validity.
