Overview of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Visit to Madhya Pradesh on May 31, 2025On May 31, 2025, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi visited Madhya Pradesh (MP) to inaugurate, lay the foundation and dedicate various development projects.
Inauguration of development projects:
On the occasion of the 300th birth anniversary of legendary Queen Ahilyabhai Holkar, PM Modi addressed the Mahila Sashaktikaran Mahasammelan (Women empowerment programme) at Jamboree Maidan in Bhopal, MP.
i.PM Modi virtually inaugurated the Super Priority Corridor (SPC) of Indore Metro, to modernize the infrastructure. Indore becomes India’s 16th city and MP’s first to get metro rail service.
ii.He inaugurated airports in Datia and Satna in MP.
iii.He laid the foundation for ghats along the Shilpa River and announced the construction of 1,271 Atal Gram Seva Sadan (Panchayat Bhawan), with an outlay of Rs.483 crore, to enhance rural infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.
iv.PM Modi released a commemorative postage stamp, and a special coin dedicated to Devi Ahilyabhai Holkar. The Rs.300 coin will feature a portrait of Ahilyabhai Holkar.

NSO Released Provisional Estimates of Annual GDP for FY25 & Quarterly Estimates of GDP for Q4 of FY25In May 2025, the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the Provisional Estimates (PE) of India’s Gross Domestic Product for Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25) and Quarterly Estimates of GDP for 4th Quarter (Q4: January-March) of FY25 along with its expenditure components.

  • As per the NSO latest data, India’s Real GDP is estimated to have slowed to a 4-year low i.e. at 6.5% for full FY25, which is exactly the same as projected in NSO’s Second Advanced Estimates (SAE) released in February 2025.
  • This projection is 10 basis points (bps) lower than the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s projection of 6.6% for full FY25.
  • In contrast to it, India’s Real GDP grew at 7.4% in Q4FY25, the fastest quarterly growth in the year. This growth is mainly driven by industrial growth in sectors like: manufacturing (+4.8%), construction (+10.8%), and mining (+2.5%).
  • The NSO data has also revised up India’s GDP estimate for Q3FY25 from its previous estimate of 6.2% to 6.4%.

i.Real GDP or GDP at Constant (2011-12) prices is estimated at Rs 187.97 lakh crore in FY25 compared to Rs 176.51 lakh crore in First Revised Estimates (FRE) of GDP for FY24.
ii.The Nominal GDP saw the growth rate of 10.8% in Q4FY25. It is estimated to reach Rs 88.18 lakh crore in Q4FY25 as against Rs 79.61 lakh crore in Q4FY24.
iii.Real GVA registered a growth of 6.8% (in Q4FY25) compared to 7.3% (in Q4FY24). It is estimated at Rs 45.76 lakh crore in Q4FY25, against Rs 42.86 lakh crore in Q4FY24.

NSO Data: 51% Rural Women do not own a Mobile PhoneIn May 2025, National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India (GoI) released ‘Comprehensive Modular Survey: Telecom, 2025 (CMS-T) report’, as part of the 80th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS) conducted during January – March 2025. The survey reveals that 51.6% of women aged 15 years and above in ruralareas do not own a mobile phone.

  • The NSO survey defined mobile phone ownership as having a device with an active Subscriber Identity Module(SIM) card for personal use.

i.In India, about 85.5% of households own at least one smartphone. Additionally, approximately 86.3% of households in India have internet access within their premises.
ii.Among individuals aged 15-29 years, 68.7% of the age group can perform online banking transaction by using Mobile or computer across India, of which 63.4% are in rural areas and 79.7% are in urban areas.

DoP Released DHRUVA Policy for National Digital Address DPI
In May 2025, the Department of Posts (DoP), also known as India Post, under the Ministry of Communications (MoC), released a comprehensive policy document on DHRUVA (Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address), setting the framework for a national Digital Address Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), to build a standardized, interoperable, and geo-coded digital addressing system across India.

  • DHRUVA aims to simplify location identification to improve government services, emergency response, and accuracy in sectors like e-commerce, banking, and urban planning.
  • It promotes Address-as-a-Service (AaaS), a secure and efficient address data management system enabling seamless interaction among citizens, government bodies, and private organizations.
  • DHRUVA builds on the Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN), a geo-coded addressing system developed by DoP in collaboration with Hyderabad (Telangana)-based Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) and Bengaluru (Karnataka)-based National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Malaysia & UAE Jointly Elected as Presidency of UN-Habitat General Assembly for 2025-29

In May 2025, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were jointly elected to lead the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) General Assembly for the 2025–2029 term. This co-presidency was unanimously approved by all 193 UN member states during the Assembly’s session held in Nairobi, Kenya.

  • This is the first time in 15 years that a Malaysian representative has held a leadership position in a UN body.
  • Through their joint leadership, Malaysia and the UAE aim to bolster multilateral collaboration and drive forward the UN-Habitat Agenda, encouraging member states to step up their efforts in realizing the goals of the New Urban Agenda.

Key Points:
i.Malaysia, represented by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, will serve as President of the Assembly and, alongside the UAE, hold a seat on the Executive Board, representing the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Malaysia succeeds Mexico, which formerly held the presidency representing the Latin America and Caribbean region.

ii.UAE’s presidency reinforces its commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG-11): creating “inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities.”
iii.The UAE also aims to collaborate with member states, civil society, and the private sector to develop action plans that ensure safe, inclusive, and sustainable housing for all.
About UN-Habitat Assembly:
i.The UN-Habitat Assembly, convening every four years, is the UN’s highest decision-making body on sustainable urbanization and human settlements.
ii.It sets key priorities for UN-Habitat’s work, which operates in over 70 countries focusing on areas such as urban legislation, land and governance, urban planning and design, basic services, slum upgrading, housing, and disaster recovery.
iii.Based in Nairobi, Kenya, the UN-Habitat Assembly was founded in 1975 and was upgraded to a full programme by the United Nations General Assembly in 2001.

NOMADIC ELEPHANT 2025: 17th India, Mongolia Joint Military Exercise held in Ulaanbaatar, MongoliaThe 17th edition of Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT, annual bilateral joint military exercise between India and Mongolia commenced on May 31, 2025, at the Special Forces Training Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

  • The exercise is scheduled to run until June 13, 2025.
  • The aim of the exercise is to enhance joint military capabilities between the two countries.

Note: The 16th edition of the exercise was held in Umroi, Meghalaya in July 2024.
Key People:
The opening ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including India’s Ambassador to Mongolia, Atul Malhari Gotsurve, and Major General Lkhagvasuren Ganselem from the Mongolian side.
Participants:
i.The Indian contingent comprising 45 personnel, mainly the troops from a battalion of the ARUNACHAL SCOUTS are the participants.
ii.The Mongolian Armed Forces contingent, also containing similar strength, represented by 150 units.
Key Points:
i.The scope of the exercise involves Platoon level Field Training Exercise. During the exercise, Indian and Mongolian troops will engage in various training activities to include endurance training, reflex shooting, room intervention, small team tactics and rock craft training.
ii.In addition, to enhance complexity of exercise, aspects training to Cyber Warfare are also incorporated in the 17th edition of the exercise. Soldiers from both sides will learn each other’s operational experience.
About Ex NOMADIC ELEPHANT:
i.Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT is a bilateral military exercise conducted annually between the Indian Army and the Mongolian Armed Forces.
ii.The exercise was initiated in 2004 and conducted alternatively in India and Mongolia.
iii.The exercise underscores the shared commitment of India and Mongolia towards regional security, peace and stability.

RBI Launched ‘Climate Risk Data Platform’ to Address Financial Sector RisksIn May 2025, Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based central bank, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) launched ‘Reserve Bank- Climate Risk Information System (RBI-CRIS)’, a two-pronged data platform aimed to fix persistent gaps in climate-related financial information.

  • The launch of this new system indicates the RBI’s recognition that climate change is emerging as one of the major risks to the financial system.
  • RBI is also finalising a Disclosure Framework on climate-related financial risks to improve transparency across financial institutions. In parallel, it is fostering innovation through an ‘On Tap’ cohort on climate risk and sustainable finance under its Regulatory Sandbox, and by hosting a ‘Greenathon’ to promote green finance solutions.

Note: This RBI-CRIS data platform was 1st proposed by RBI during its bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held in October 2024.
About RBI-CRIS:
i.The new data platform will comprise two parts: a web-based directory listing various data sources such as meteorological , geo-spatial which will be publicly accessible in the RBI website.

  • A restricted-access data portal will offer processed, standardized datasets to regulated Financial Institutions (FIs).

ii.It aims to fix and standardize 3 data gaps: physical risk, transition risk, and carbon emission.

iii.Indian FIs faces two main categories of climate risk i.e. physical risk which arises from natural disasters like: floods, droughts, cyclones, and Tsunamis.

  • Estimates of Physical risks depend upon hazard data like: geographic susceptibility to extreme weather conditions and vulnerability data which includes information about historical financial losses.
  • While, another one is transition risk which stems from shifts in policy, technology, or market sentiment as the world moves toward a low-carbon economy. Such risks require information on sectoral emissions, carbon pricing, and benchmark decarbonisation pathways.

iv.This new system will lead to more rigorous climate-risk evaluations and support informed decision-making across India’s financial sector.

SBI Report: India’s GDP Grows at 7.4% in Q4FY25; Projects 6.3-6.5% GDP for FY26On May 30, 2025, Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based India’s largest Public Sector Bank (PSB), State Bank of India (SBI) released SBI Research Ecowrap report. As per the report, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) registered robust growth of 7.4% in fourth Quarter (Q4: January-March) of Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25).

  • This growth is mainly driven by a sharp 12.7% increase in net indirect taxes.
  • The report further projected that India will continue to be the fastest-growing major economy in FY26, with GDP estimated to be in the range of 6.3% to 6.5%.

Key Findings:
i.The report showed that GDP deflator decreased to 3.1% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) in Q4FY25 as against 3.7% Y-o-Y in Q3FY25.

  • The report further showed the deflator of key sectors in Q4FY25: agriculture (-3.2%), industry (+1.5%), and services (-3.2%).
  • However, Annually GDP deflator increased from 2.7% Y-o-Y in FY24 to 3.1% Y-o-Y in FY25, with agriculture witnessing lower deflator growth, while industry and services deflator increased.

ii.As per the report, almost all sectors showed better growth in Q4FY25. The services sector takes the lead with growth at 7.3% in QFY25 followed by public administration, defence and other services (8.7%), and financial, real estate and professional services (7.8%).
SBI Signed MoU with Karnataka Digital Economy Mission to Support GCC in Karnataka
In May 2025, Mumbai (Maharashtra) based State Bank of India (SBI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), initiative of Government of Karnataka aimed at supporting Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in Karnataka.

  • The MoU was signed by Joohi Smitha Sinha, Chief General Manager (CGM) of SBI Bengaluru Circle, and Sanjeev Gupta, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KDEM, during ‘GCC Leaders Connect’ event held at Conrad Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • During the event, SBI also announced the inauguration of India’s 1st ‘Exclusive GCC Centre’ in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This pioneering initiative is designed to offer customised banking solutions and comprehensive support to the rapidly expanding GCC ecosystem in Karnataka.

CGA Data: India Achieves FY25 Fiscal Deficit Target of 4.77% of GDPOn May 30, 2025, the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) under the Ministry of Finance (MoF), Government of India (GoI), released provisional data indicating that India achieved its fiscal deficit target for the Financial Year 2024–25 (FY25) with Rs.15.77 lakh crore, accounting for 4.77% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from Rs.16.54 lakh crore in FY24.

  • This marks a marginal improvement over the Revised Estimate (RE) of 4.84%, reflecting better fiscal management.
  • The improvement was driven by a higher-than-estimated nominal GDP of Rs.330.68 lakh crore, compared to the Revised Estimate (RE) of Rs.324.11 lakh crore.

Note: A fiscal deficit represents the gap between government expenditure and revenue, excluding borrowings. It indicates the amount the government needs to borrow to cover its expenses.
Key Findings:
i.Total Expenditure: Stood at Rs.46.56 lakh crore (FY25), achieving 98.7% of the revised budget targets, compared to Rs.44.43 lakh crore in FY24.

  • Capital Expenditure: Increased to Rs.10.52 lakh crore in FY25 from Rs.9.49 lakh crore in FY24, reflecting enhanced government investment.
  • Revenue Expenditure: Rose to Rs.36.04 lakh crore in FY25, up from Rs.34.94 lakh crore in FY24.

ii.Revenue Receipts: Totaled Rs.30.78 lakh crore in FY25, compared to Rs.27.89 trillion in FY24, showing steady growth.

  • Net Tax Revenue: Amounted to Rs.24.99 lakh crore in FY25, which is 97.7% of the revised estimate (RE), compared to Rs.23.27 lakh crore in FY24.
  • Non-Tax Revenue: Rs.5.38 lakh crore in FY25, achieving 101.2% of the RE, up from Rs.4.02 trillion in FY24.
  • Revenue deficit was at Rs 5.67 lakh crore or 92.9% of the fiscal year’s budget target.

iii.Future Targets: The GoI has set a fiscal deficit target of 4.4% of GDP for FY26, aiming to reduce it further to 4.5% by FY27.

Microsoft and Yotta Partner to Accelerate AI Innovation in India
In May 2025, Microsoft Corporation, United States of America (USA), partnered with Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based Yotta Data Services Private Limited to accelerate Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption in India by integrating Microsoft Azure AI services into Yotta’s sovereign Shakti Cloud platform, empowering developers, startups, enterprises, and public sector organisations with advanced AI capabilities.
The collaboration supports the IndiaAI Mission launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), a Rs 10,372 crore (approved in 2024) initiative aimed at building a strong AI ecosystem in India through enhancing compute capacity, creating AI datasets, developing applications, and fostering innovation.
Key Features:
i.Microsoft will offer its Azure AI models, applications, developer tools, and services like Machine Learning Studio, security portfolio, and GitHub integration.
ii.Yotta Data Services will provide its robust GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) infrastructure hosted within India, ensuring data sovereignty and low-latency AI compute power.
iii.Microsoft and Yotta will collaborate with government agencies, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), startups, enterprises, and software development companies involved in the IndiaAI Mission, which has received over 500 proposals to develop indigenous AI models as of May 2025.
iv.This joint platform will accelerate AI innovation in critical sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, finance, manufacturing, retail, and media by enabling real-time AI applications and faster model training.

FSIB Recommends Asheesh Pandey, Kalyan Kumar as MD & CEO of UBI and CBIIn May 2025, The Mumbai (Maharashtra) based Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) has recommended Asheesh Pandey as the Managing Director (MD) & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mumbai (Maharashtra) based Union Bank of India (UBI) and Kalyan Kumar as the MD & CEO of Mumbai (Maharashtra) based Central Bank of India (CBI).

  • Currently Asheesh Pandey is serving as the Executive Director (ED) of the Pune (Maharashtra) based Bank of Maharashtra (BOM) and will succeed Manimekhalai, whose 3-year tenure will be completed in June 2025.
  • Kalyan Kumar currently serves as ED at the New Delhi (Delhi) based Punjab National Bank (PNB) and will replace MV Rao, who will retire in July 2025.

i.Asheesh began his banking career at Corporation bank in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
ii.He has worked in UBI in roles such as Project Manager for establishing the insurance and Mutual Funds (MF) businesses.
iii.He also headed the Specialised Credit Processing Cell (SARAL) in Mumbai and served as the Head of the Chairman’s Secretariat in UBI.

Sidi Ould Tah Elected as New President of AfDB for 5-Year Term
In May 2025, Mauritanian economist Sidi Ould Tah was elected as the ninth President of the Abidjan (Ivory Coast) based African Development Bank (AfDB) during the AfDB Annual Meetings 2025 held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

  • He will assume office on 1st September 2025 for a five-year term, succeeding Akinwumi Adesina of Nigeria, who served two full terms.
  • He secured 76.18% of the total votes and 72.37% of the regional votes in the third round, winning over four other candidates

i.Sidi Ould Tah brings more than 30 years of expertise in African and global finance, having led Khartoum (Sudan)-based Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) as its Director General(DG) from 2015 to 2025.

Prathapa Reddy Appointed as Chairman of Telangana Grameena Bank for 3 years
In May 2025, Hyderabad (Telangana) based Telangana Grameena Bank (TGB) appointed K. Prathapa Reddy as its new Chairman for three years, succeeding Y. Sobha with an immediate effect.
i.K. Prathapa Reddy, a science graduate, is a professional banker with over 20 years of experience at the State Bank of India (SBI).
ii.Prior to this appointment, he held the position of Deputy General Manager (DGM) at SBI.
iii.He brings significant leadership experience, having served as the Chairman of  Warangal (Telangana) based Andhra Pradesh Grameena Vikas Bank (APGVB) for two years.
Note: Effective January 1, 2025, TGB was formed by merging the original TGB with the Telangana operations of APGVB, creating a single unified Regional Rural Bank (RRB) for Telangana, under the sponsorship of SBI. With this merger, Telangana became the first state in India to implement the One State One RRB framework.

Kannada Poet & Playwright H.S. Venkatesha Murthy Passed Away
In May 2025, Renowned Kannada poet, playwright, and scholar Hodigere Shanbhog Venkatesha Murthy (HSV) passed away at the age of 81 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

  • He was born in 1944 in Hodigere village, Channagiri taluk, Davanagere district, Karnataka.

About H.S. Venkatesha Murthy:
i.He was known for his distinctive contribution to Kannada literature spanning poetry, drama, translation, children’s literature, film, and music.
ii.Academic: Served as Professor at Bengaluru (Karnataka)-based St. Joseph’s College of Commerce for 30+ years.
iii.Cinema & TV: Penned lyrics for films like Kirik Party (“Thoogu Manchadalli Koothu”), America America, and Chinnari Mutha; directed autobiographical film Hasiru Ribbon (2018).
iv.Classical Texts: Simplified Kumaravyasa Bharata and Pampa’s Vikramarjuna Vijaya for younger readers.
v.Awards: Throughout his illustrious career, HSV received numerous accolades, including: Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize(1991); Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award (won five times), Rajyotsava Award (2003), Sahitya Akademi Bal Puraskar (2013) and Filmfare Best Lyricist Award (2019).

Veteran Naturalist and ‘BirdManSunjoy Monga Passes Away
In May 2025, renowned Indian naturalist, wildlife photographer, and conservationist Sunjoy Monga, affectionately known as ‘BirdMan, passed away at the age of 63 after a prolonged battle with blood cancer in Mumbai (Maharashtra). He was born on 1961 in South Mumbai (Maharashtra).
i.In 2005, Monga founded the Mumbai Bird Race, titled ‘WINGS – Birds of India’, which evolved into an annual event encouraging citizen participation in birdwatching and conservation.
ii.In 2006–2007, he first warned about 85% wetland loss in Uran (Maharastra), highlighting the threat of urbanization to flamingos and coastal biodiversity.

Telangana Government Notified Tiger Corridor of Kawal as ‘Kumram Bheem Conservation Reserve’In May 2025, the state government of Telangana has officially declared the tiger corridor area connecting the Kawal Tiger Reserve (TR) in the state with the Tadoba-Andhari (TATR) in Maharashtra as Kumram Bheem Conservation Reserve’, as per Section 36A of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

  • With this declaration, the focus will now shift to bolstering tiger conservation efforts in the reserve which includes dedicated funding and the recruitment of additional personnel to support protection and management initiatives.

i.The proposed Kumram Bheem Conservation Reserve covers the total area of 1,492.88 square kilometers (sq. km), which spread across the Kagaznagar and Asifabad forest divisions in Komaram Bheem Asifabad district, and 78 reserve forest blocks.
i.The state government has also constituted a 12-member Conservation Reserve Management Committee, with Kumram Bheem Asifabad Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) serving as the member secretary or convener of the committee.
Note: Currently, there are total 58 TRs in India. Madhav National Park (NP) in Madhya Pradesh (MP) was declared 58th TR by the Government of India (GoI) in March 2025.
