Jordan Becomes 1st Country Globally to Receive WHO Verification for Eliminating LeprosyJordan becomes first country to receive WHO verification for eliminating leprosyThe World Health Organization (WHO) officially verified Jordan as the 1st country in the world to have eliminated leprosy (also known as Hansen’s disease), a chronic infectious disease caused by a bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae.

  • Jordan has not reported any locally transmitted (autochthonous) cases of leprosy for over 2 decades. This achievement is seen as a significant step in public health efforts to eliminate leprosy worldwide.

Note: The official WHO verification was received by Feras Ibrahim Hawari, Minister of Health, Jordan from Dr. Jamela Al-Raiby, WHO Representative to Jordan on behalf of the WHO.
Key Points:
i.This achievement is expected to inspire other countries to enhance their efforts against leprosy.
ii.Despite the elimination, Jordan will need to maintain robust surveillance systems to detect and manage any potential future cases, including those from foreign sources.
iii.The success is seen as a result of collaboration between Jordan’s Ministry of Health and the WHO (provided technical support) at various levels.
Collaboration and Strategy:
i.The elimination of leprosy globally is not just about tackling the disease itself, but also about addressing the associated stigma and the psychological and socio-economic impacts.
ii.Jordan’s success is attributed to strong political commitment, collaboration, and effective public health strategies.
iii.An independent team commissioned by the WHO conducted an extensive review before recommending that Jordan be acknowledged for eliminating leprosy.
About Leprosy:
i.Leprosy is an age-old disease that mainly affects the skin and peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, and the eyes.

  • It potentially causes disabilities if untreated that include permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs, and eyes.

ii.Leprosy is a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) that still occurs in over 120 countries. More than 200,000 new cases are reported every year.
iii.Leprosy is a curable disease and the currently recommended treatment regimen consists of 3 drugs: dapsone, rifampicin, and clofazimine.

  • The combination is referred to as Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT).

iv.The disease spreads via nasal and oral droplets after close, prolonged contact with untreated individuals. It is not transmitted through casual interactions.
v.Diagnosis is based on clinical signs like skin lesions, nerve thickening, and microscopic detection of bacilli.

  • Based on that, the cases are classified as Paucibacillary (PB), or Multibacillary (MB) for treatment purposes.
