India Completes Screening 6 Crore People under National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission
On July 22, 2025, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) announced that 6 crore people had been screened for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) under the National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission, moving closer to the target of 7 crore screenings.

  • Out of the 6 crore individuals, 2.15 lakh individuals are diagnosed with SCD, and 16.7 lakh have been identified as carriers.
  • Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder, characterized by abnormally shaped red blood cells.

i.The states, including Madhya Pradesh (MP), Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Karnataka, and Uttarakhand have exceeded the screening targets. 2.6 crore health cards have been distributed to screened individuals across the states.
ii.Odisha, Chhattisgarh, MP, Maharashtra, and Gujarat have reported higher numbers of diagnosed cases for SCD.
iii.The screening is conducted using Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) kits, which gives rapid, reliable, and confirmatory results.
Note: The National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission was launched on July 1, 2023, with an aim of eliminating SCD by 2047, especially among tribal and vulnerable populations.

Nagaland University to Host One of Four Incubation Centres in Northeast
In July 2025, Nagaland University has been selected to host one of the four Incubation Centres in the North Eastern Region (NER) under a Government of India’s(GoI) initiative titled “Establish, Develop, and Manage Entrepreneurship Development Centres and Incubation Centres in the Educational Institutes of the North Eastern Region”.

  • The initiative is sponsored by Meghalaya based North Eastern Council (NEC) and implemented by Guwahati (Assam)-based Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).

i.The project aims to foster a startup ecosystem and encourage entrepreneurship in the North Eastern region comprising Arunachal Pradesh (AR), Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.
ii.A total of 145 beneficiaries selected across the region in Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25).

  • The Nagaland University Incubation Centre has been assigned 44 beneficiaries, including 16 from AR, 6 from Assam, 4 from Manipur, and 18 from Nagaland.

iii.The Nagaland University Incubation Centre will offer Mentorship, workshops, ideathons, bootcamps, hackathons and awareness campaigns.
iv.The top 50 high-performing incubatees will be eligible to receive startup seed funding of up to Rs 5 lakh each.

World Bank Report: By 2030, Indian Cities to Create 70% of Jobs but May Lose USD 5 billion to FloodsWorld Bank Report By 2030, Indian cities to create 70% of jobs but may lose USD 5 bn to floodsIn July 2025, the World Bank Group (WBG) released its latest report titled ‘Towards Resilient and Prosperous Cities in India’, prepared in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India (GoI). The report has projected that Indian cities hold huge potential as centres of economic growth, with 70% of new jobs coming from cities by 2030.

  • Annual pluvial flood-related losses are expected to increase from currently estimated USD 4 billion to USD 5 billion by 2030 and between USD 14 and USD 30 billion by 2070, if cities don’t invest in adoption.

Key Findings:
i.India’s urban population is expected to almost double by 2050 to 951 million and over 144 million new homes will be required by 2070.
ii.The report warns that Indian cities face increasing vulnerability to climate risks like floods and heatwaves, necessitating investments exceeding USD 2.4 trillion by 2050 and USD 10.9 trillion by 2070 to develop resilient, low-carbon infrastructure.
iii.Intense heat waves and urban heat island effects were already causing temperatures in city centres to increase by over 3-4 degrees over surrounding areas.
iv.The report has studied 24 Indian cities, with a special focus on cities like: Chennai (Tamil Nadu, TN), Indore (Madhya Pradesh, MP), New Delhi (Delhi) ,Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh, UP), Surat (Gujarat) and Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala).

SEBI Introduces Centralised Compliance Reporting Platform for Brokers Effective August 1, 2025Sebi launches unified compliance platform for brokers to boost ease of doing businessIn July 2025, the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in collaboration with National Stock Exchange (NSE), has launched Samuhik Prativedan Manch, a unified reporting platform to simplify compliance for stockbrokers.

  • This initiative is designed to make compliance processes more streamlined, transparent, and cost-effective for stockbrokers.
  • From August 1, 2025, the mechanism will be introduced in a step-by-step manner.

Key Highlights:
i.Currently, brokers registered with multiple stock exchanges are required to submit identical compliance reports to each exchange individually.

  • After this platform launch, brokers will now be able to submit their compliance reports through a single interface, significantly reducing duplication of effort and lowering compliance costs.

ii.The new system will be implemented in phases, with 40 compliance reports included in the first rollout starting August 01,2025.

  • In the subsequent phases, the remaining document submissions will be standardised and integrated into the centralised reporting platform, covering all remaining brokers, including commodity brokers.

iii.As per estimates, approximately 990 stockbrokers with memberships across multiple exchanges are expected to benefit immediately from this initiative.
iv.The initiative represents another step forward in SEBI’s broader efforts to harness technology for creating a more investor- and intermediary-friendly market ecosystem.

PhonePe Partnered with SBI Card To Launch Two Co-Branded Credit CardsSBI Card, PhonePe launch co-branded credit card On July 22, 2025, PhonePe, a digital payments and financial services company,
in partnership with SBI Cards and Payment Services Limited, a subsidiary of the State Bank of India (SBI) jointly launched co-branded credit cards of two variants such as ‘PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE’ and ‘PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK’, with an aim to broaden formal credit access by offering rewards to customers on their everyday transactions.

  • The two contactless credit card variants are issued on both RuPay and VISA networks.
  • VISA cards can be tokenized on the PhonePe Application(app) and the RuPay variants can be linked to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for seamless transactions.

About PhonePe SBI Cards:
i.The PhonePe SBI Cards offer reward points on groceries, travel, utility payments, insurance premiums, and financial transactions in PhonePe application.
ii.The PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK, designed for premium customers, offers up to 10% on PhonePe and Pincode applications, and 5% on other online transactions.

  • It offers an electronic (e) gift voucher of Rs.1,500 on joining fee payment, milestone travel voucher of Rs.5,000 for an annual spend of Rs. 5 lakhs on travel.

iii.The PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE offers up to 3% on PhonePe and Pincode applications, and 2% on other online transactions.

  • It includes welcome e-gift vouchers of Rs.500, an annual travel voucher of Rs.3,000 on 3 lakhs on travel, and 1% value back as reward points on other eligible transactions.

iv.The application process is integrated into the PhonePe App, where customers can apply for the PhonePe SBI Cards.
v.The reward points can be redeemed to settle the outstanding card bills or avail e-gift vouchers.

PSBs GNPA Dropped from 9.11% in FY21 to 2.58% in FY25Public sector bank NPAs drop to 2.58% from 9.11% in 4 yrs Finance ministryAccording to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s provisional data which showed that Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) of Public Sector Banks (PSBs) has steadily decreased over the last 5 years i.e. from 9.11%(6.16 lakh crore) in Financial Year 2020-21 (FY21) to 2.58%(Rs.2.83 lakh crore) in FY25.

  • He also highlighted that this decline in GNPAs was mainly attributed by joint measures initiated by the Government of India (GoI) and the RBI.

Key Findings:
i.As per RBI’s data, PSBs witnessed sharp decline in their GNPAs, mainly due to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) that could remove non-payers from the company’s management and bar wilful defaulters from participating in the resolution process.
ii.Timely identification of potential defaults has helped reduce the fresh addition of NPAs by PSBs to below 1% of their standard advances, a sharp decline from 8.35% in March 2018.
iii.With the joint efforts of the Government of India(GoI) and the RBI, GNPA of Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs), including PSBs, declined from Rs 10.36 lakh crore (as of March 31, 2018) to Rs 4.45 lakh crore (in December 2024).

RBI’s financial inclusion index rises 4.3% to 67 in FY25, shows growth across all segmentsIndia's financial inclusion index improves, surges to 67 from 64.2 in March 2024 RBIThe Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Financial Inclusion Index (FI-Index), which measures the depth and reaches of financial inclusion across the country, rose by 4.3% in Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25).

  • The index value increased from 64.2 in March 2024 to 67 in March 2025, reflecting steady progress across all sub-indices, i.e. access, usage, and quality of financial services.
  • The annual FI-Index for the period ending March 2021 is 53.9 as against 43.4 for the period ending March 2017.

About the Index:
i.The RBI had constructed a composite FI-Index in consultation with the concerned stakeholders including the Government, to capture the extent of financial inclusion across the country.

  • The index was first introduced by the RBI in August 2021 for the FY ending March 2021.

ii.It is a comprehensive index incorporating details of banking, investments, insurance, postal and pension sectors.

  • The index captures information on various aspects of financial inclusion in a single value ranging between 0 and 100, where 0 represents complete financial exclusion and 100 indicates full financial inclusion.

iii.The FI-Index comprises of three broad parameters i.e.,

  • Access (35%) – Reflecting how easily financial services are available.
  • Usage (45%) – Indicates how frequently and effectively people are using these services.
  • Quality (20%) – Captures the quality aspect of financial inclusion as reflected by financial literacy, consumer protection, and inequalities and deficiencies in services.

iv.The FI-Index has been constructed without any ‘base year’ and published annually in July every year.

SEBI Renews Recognition of MCXCCL as Clearing Corporation
In July 2025, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) renewed the recognition of Multi Commodity Exchange Clearing Corporation Limited (MCXCCL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) as a clearing corporation for a period of three years, from July 31, 2025, to July 30, 2028.

  • The renewal is subject to compliance with SEBI’s regulatory framework, including risk management, capital adequacy, and corporate governance standards.

i.MCXCCL is the clearing corporation for trades, conducted on the MCX platform, managing clearing and settlement for commodity derivatives on MCX.
ii.Following the approval, the contracts will be available for trading throughout the calendar year.
iii.The other Clearing Corporations of India include Indian Clearing Corporation Limited (ICCL), National Securities Clearing Corporation Limited(NSCCL), Metropolitan Clearing Corporation of India Limited (MCCIL), India International Clearing Corporation (IFSC) Limited (IICC), NSE IFSC Clearing Corporation Limited (NICCL), Clearing Corporation of India Limited (CCIL) and others.

KredX & Canara Bank Partnered to Enhance MSME Digital Trade Finance via DTX
In July 2025, KredX, India’s leading integrated supply chain finance platform, signed a strategic partnership with Canara Bank, to bridge the Rs. 30 lakh crore credit gap in the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.

  • The collaboration aims to enhance digital trade finance via KredX’s Reserve Bank of India (RBI)-licensed Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) platform, Domestic Trade Exchange (DTX).

i.DTX is a digital-first TReDS platform, approved by the RBI, designed for end-to-end trade finance with over 50 registered financiers.
ii.It offers instant working capital access to suppliers and enables enterprise buyers to manage cash flows efficiently.
iii.By incorporating real-time processing, automated workflows, and a user-friendly interface, DTX facilitates seamless trade receivables discounting.
Note: KredX has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME) to integrate its platform with the Udyam registration database.

As per the list, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport(CSMIA) in Mumbai (Maharashtra) has been ranked ninth on the list with the reader score of 84.23.

  • Istanbul Airport(Turkey) has been ranked first for the second consecutive year with a score of 98.57.

Key Highlights:
i.Hong Kong International Airport, China ranked 6th with a score of 86.22, followed closely by Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, Finland ranked 7th with a score of 86.18.

  • Helsinki-Vantaa Airport , known for its minimalist design and operational efficiency, is the only new airport featured in the 2025 list.

ii.Haneda Airport in Tokyo secured the 8th position with a score of 84.47, while Incheon International Airport in South Korea ranked 10th with 83.67.
iii.8 out of 10 airports are from Asia and the Middle East regions. 5 airports across Asia from countries such as Singapore, China (Hong Kong International Airport), Japan (Haneda Airport), UAE, India, and South Korea (Incheon International Airport) have been ranked among top 10.
iv.3 airports across the Middle East region such as Doha (Qatar), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Dubai (UAE) have featured among top 5.

BITS Pilani-Based Start-Up Apollyon Dynamics, Delivers Indigenous Drones to Indian Army
In July 2025,  Apollyon Dynamics, a defence-tech startup founded by Jayant Khatri and Sourya Choudhury from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani-Hyderabad Campus, has successfully delivered indigenously developed Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to the Indian Army(IA).

  • Jayant Khatri, and Sourya Choudhury, developed the drone in a hostel room, building these systems in-house with a focus on ruggedness, reliability, and adaptability to Indian terrains and missions.

i.The radar-evading kamikaze drones have been deployed at four major IA bases: Jammu(Jammu & Kashmir, J&K), Chandimandir (Haryana), Panagarh (West Bengal, WB), and Arunachal Pradesh(AR).
ii.These high-speed drones, can fly at speeds over 300 kilometres per hour(km/h), evade radar detection, and carry payloads of up to 1 kilogram(kg) with precision.
iii.The startup also provides hands-on training to Army personnel, enabling soldiers with no prior experience to operate the drones effectively.
Note: The Apollyon Dynamics team has included six second-year students, working on next-generation Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) platforms and fixed-wing UAVs.

Japan Badminton Open 2025: Shi Yu Qi won Men’s singles and An Se-young won Women’s singlesJapan Open 2025 An Seyoung captures sixth title of the year as Shi Yu Qi clinches men's singles title crownThe 42nd edition of the Japan Open Badminton Tournament, officially titled as the Daihatsu Japan Open 2025 was a premium badminton tournament held at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Sports complex in Tokyo(Japan), from 15th to 20th July 2025.

  • China’s Shi Yu Qi (Currently World No.2) and South Korea’s An Se-Young (World No. 1) wins the Men’s and Women’s singles title, respectively.
  • Indian Badminton Players namely P.V. Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and others were defeated at the earlier rounds of the tournament.
  • However, India’s Anupama Upadhyaya reached Round 16 in the women’s singles before being eliminated by Wang Zhi Yi(China).

Highlights:
Men’s singles: China’s Shi Yu Qi (Currently World No.2) won against the defending champion of France’s Alex Lanier (World No.8) in the finals.
Women’s singles: South Korea’s World No. 1 shuttler An Se-Young captured her 6th  title of the season with a straight-game 21-12, 21-10 against Wang Zhiyi (China).

  • She claimed the sixth title of 2025 after the Malaysia Open, India Open, Orleans Masters, All England Open, and Indonesia Open.

Note: An Se-Young became the first South Korean to win an Olympic medal in women’s single badminton at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Andre Russell Retired from all forms of International Cricket
On July 22, 2025, West Indies All-Rounder, Andre Russell retired from international cricket, during the 2nd and final of the Twenty20 International (T20I) series against Australia in Jamaica and Saint (St). Kitts, West Indies. He was given a guard of honour by players from both West Indies and Australia.

  • His international career, spanning over 15 years, includes being part of the T20 World Cup Champions team in 2012 and 2016.

i.He debuted in Test Cricket format in 2010 against Sri Lanka, which was the only test match in his international career.
ii.In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he scored 1,034 runs and took 70 wickets in 56 matches.
iii. In T20Is, he scored 1,078 runs and took 61 wickets in 84 matches and in franchise T20 leagues worldwide, he has scored over 9,300 runs and taken 485 wickets.
iv.In Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, he played for the franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

National Broadcasting Day 2025 – July 23National Broadcasting Day - July 23 2025National Broadcasting Day is annually observed across India on 23 July to commemorate the establishment of the private radio station ‘Indian Broadcasting Company’ (IBC) in Bombay (now Mumbai, Maharashtra) in 1927.

  • The day celebrates radio as the first major source of news and entertainment before Television (TV), highlighting its role in public service communication and its ongoing importance in the digital era.
  • July 23, 2025 marks the 98th anniversary of IBC, later renamed as All India Radio (AIR) on 8th June 1936.

Key Points:
i.In June 1923, the Radio Club of Bombay conducted the first-ever radio broadcast in India, marking the beginning of radio communication in the country.
ii.AIR, officially known as Akashvani, is India’s national public radio broadcaster.

  • It operates under the PB, India’s autonomous public service broadcasting agency, which also governs Doordarshan.

TN to Establish India’s First CoE for Hornbill Conservation at Anamalai Tiger ReserveTamil Nadu to set up hornbill conservation centre at Anamalai Tiger ReserveIn July 2025, the Government of Tamil Nadu (TN) announced the establishment of India’s first Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Hornbill Conservation at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), in Coimbatore district of TN, to protect hornbills, essential seed dispersers facing threats from deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and climate change.

  • The project, funded with Rs 1 crore under the Endangered Species Conservation Corpus Fund, will be implemented by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Government of TN.

Key Highlights:
i.The centre will focus on the four hornbill species found in the Western Ghats:

  • Great Hornbill (Buceros bicornis)
  • Malabar Grey Hornbill (Ocyceros griseus)
  • Malabar Pied Hornbill (Anthracoceros coronatus)
  • Indian Grey Hornbill (Ocyceros birostris)

ii.The centre will conduct scientific research, implement habitat restoration, and promote community participation in conservation efforts.
iii.The project includes habitat mapping, nest monitoring, Global Positioning System (GPS)-based tracking, climate impact studies, forest restoration with native trees, artificial nest installation, and sapling propagation for ecological recovery.

Uttarakhand Launches India’s First Systematic Plant Conservation Programme
In July 2025, the Research Wing of the Uttarakhand Forest Department has launched a first-of-its-kind systematic plant conservation programme to restore 14 critically endangered plant species to their original ecosystems in the Western Himalayas. The initiative is implemented during the monsoon season to ensure optimal growth conditions.

  • It is supported by the Uttarakhand State Biodiversity Board and aligned with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, marking India’s first plant reintroduction effort.

i.The 14 species chosen for this project include Himalayan Gentian, White Himalayan Lily, Red Crane Orchid, Golden Himalayan Spike, Doon Cheese Wood, Kumaon Fan Palm, Indian Spikenard, Patwa, and Himalayan Arnebia, among others.

  • These plants are vital due to their ecological, medicinal, and cultural importance, and face threats from overharvesting, climate change, and habitat loss.

ii.Species-specific propagation was conducted in high-altitude nurseries using seeds, bulbs, rhizomes, and stem cuttings.
iii.Replantation zones were selected across alpine meadows, deciduous forests, and Terai regions, using Global Positioning System(GPS) mapping for post-planting monitoring.
