i.The Prime Minister (PM) of Japan, Fumio Kishida, was on a two-day visit to India to attend 14th India-Japan annual summit 2022 on March 19-20,2022 in New Delhi, Delhi. He was invited by the Indian PM Narendra Modi.
ii.This was Fumio Kishida’s first visit to the country since he took charge of the office last year, and also his first meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 
iii.The last India-Japan annual summit took place in 2018 in Tokyo.
iv.PM Narendra Modi gifted Fumio Kishida a ‘Krishna Pankhi’, a sandalwood artifact by master artisans in Churu in Rajasthan with intricate work with its windows depicting different poses of Lord Krishna, representing love, compassion and tenderness.
v.Both sides finalized 7 loans from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) JICA Loans worth Rs 20400 crores for projects in connectivity, water supply and sewerage, horticulture, healthcare, and biodiversity conservation in various Indian States.

NCRTC Unveils India’s First RRTS Train Along the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Corridor

The National Capital Regional Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has recently brought to light India’s first rapid rail along the Delhi to Meerut corridor. This train will be the first on a regional corridor in the country to have a business or “premium” coach.

  • This Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) train is the first-of-its-kind system in which trains, with a design speed of 180 km per hour, will be available every 5 – 10 minutes and cover the distance between Delhi and Meerut in 55 minutes with 14 stoppages.
  • The entire 82 km (approx.) Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS route, will have 25 stations in total, including two depots at Duhai and Modipuram of Uttar Pradesh and one stabling yard at Jangpura, New Delhi.

Significance:
i The train’s first phase of production began in 2021 and is presently nearing the testing and trial phase, which will be completed by the end of 2022.
ii.The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is expected to save over 2,50,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, making it the most energy efficient transport system in the world. After the implementation of Kawach technology and the new Vande Bharat trains in India, this step appears to be even more significant.
iii.By March 2023, the train is planned to cover five stations between Sahibabad, Ghaziabad District, and Duhai, both in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

ACC Extends Tenure of Jay Shah as President Till 2024Asian Cricket Council extends Jay Shah's tenure as ACC chief till 2024

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) extended the tenure of Jay Shah as ACC President, its Executive Board and Committees until 2024. The decision was taken by ACC AGM in Colombo, Sri Lanka. 

  • He  was unanimously elected as the President of the ACC on 30 January  2021. He succeeded Najmul Hasan Papon, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief.
  • The Asia Cup 2022 (T20 Format) will be held in Sri Lanka from 27 August – 11 September 2022.

Other Appointment: 
The ACC also appointed Pankaj Khimji, as the Vice President and  Mahinda Vallipuram  as Chairman of the Development Committee.

Indian Economist Jayati Ghosh Enters the UN’s Advisory Board On Effective Multilateralism

United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed Jayati Ghosh, an Indian development economist, to a new 12-member high-level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism in the UN.The Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism will be co-chaired by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former Liberian President and Nobel laureate, and Stefan Lofven, former Swedish Prime Minister.

  • The new advisory board will be tasked with building on the ideas in ‘Our Common Agenda,’ such as the importance of women and girls and the need to consider the interests of young people and future generations, to make concrete recommendations for more effective multilateral arrangements on a variety of key global issues.
  •  Its suggestions are non-binding, but they will feed member states’ discussions at the proposed Summit of the Future in 2023.

Relativistic Klystron Amplifier: China Develops Laser Weapon to Destroy Satellites in Space

The researchers from China have developed a microwave machine ‘Relativistic Klystron Amplifier (RKA)’ to jam/destroy satellites or sensitive electronics in satellites in space. It will function as a high-powered laser weapon.

  • The device can generate a wave burst of 5 Megawatts (MW) in the Ka-band. This band is a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum used for civil and military purposes.

Key Points:
i.RKA can be mounted onto satellites for attacking enemy assets in space.
ii.Notably, China is currently denying that their RKA is a Directed Energy Weapon (DEW)., which is a system that uses concentrated electromagnetic energy to destroy enemy equipment in a physical conflict.  

  • However, if RKA were built at scale, it could generate beams strong enough to go through metallic objects moving at high speeds,

The Arjuna & Padma awardee cueist, Pankaj Advani won his eighth title at  the 19th Asian 100 UP Billiards Championship 2022 in Doha, Qatar. 

  • This is the 40th international title and 8th Asian crown won by Pankaj Advani.

Highlights: 
i.Pankaj Advani defeated compatriot India’s Dhruv Sitwala by six frames.
ii.Earlier, he also defeated Pauk Sa of Myanmar to secure a spot in the final of the championship.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc wins F1 season-opening Bahrain GP

Ferrari’s driver Charles Leclerc (Monaco) won the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix 2022 of Formula one (F1) held at Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir, Bahrain. Carlos Sainz (Spain) driving Ferrari finished second by one-two.
i.While  Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain) driving Mercedes secured third podium, The fourth podium was secured by George Russell (Britain) representing Mercedes. 
ii.Kevin Magnussen (Danish) finished fifth representing the Haas team.World champion Max Verstappen (Belgian-Dutch) was forced out with an electrical issue two laps before the end.
iii.The F1 championships are organised by Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

Indian Wells Masters 2022 :  Taylor Fritz won defeating Rafael Nadal

Indian Wells Masters, also known as the Indian Wells Open and BNP Paribas Open held in California,United States from March 7, 2022 to March 20, 2022.Taylor Harry Fritz, an American professional tennis player, beat Rafael Nadal to win the ATP Indian Wells Masters, snapping the 21-time Grand Slam champion’s streak of 20 consecutive triumphs.
i.Fritz, previously ranked 20th in the world, won his second career win and first at the Masters 1000 level, depriving Nadal of a record-equalling 37th Masters trophy. He is now ranked 8th in Singles for Men by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

Venezuelan athlete, Yulimar Rojas nicknamed “la reina del triple salto – queen of the triple jump” created a World Record (WR) by clearing 15.74 metres (m) to win gold at the World Indoor Championships 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia.

  • Rojas who is 6’4 jumped 15.67m (WR) in Tokyo Olympics 2020 to claim Gold Medal, smashing the previous best of 15.50m set by Ukraine’s Inessa Kravets in 1995. Rojas won third straight world indoor triple jump gold, adding to successes in Portland, United States of America in 2016 and Birmingham, United Kingdom in 2018.
  • Yulimar Rojas is the first female Olympic gold medalist from Venezuela.

Bangladesh’s ex-interim president Shahabuddin Ahmed passes away

Shahabuddin Ahmed, the former President of Bangladesh has passed away at the age of 92 at Dhaka,Bangladesh. Shahabuddin was born on February 1, 1930 in the Netrokona, Bangladesh.
About Shahabuddin Ahmed:
i.He was the interim head of state as the consensus nominee of all parties amid a mass upsurge in 1990 to topple ex-military dictator HM Ershad.
ii.Shahabuddin Ahmed also served as the President of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001.
iii.Shahabuddin Ahmed was responsible for holding a “free and credible” election in the country in February 1991.
iv.During his nine-month rule he ensured press freedom by amending a number of laws, including the Special Powers Act.
v.After his presidential tenure, he resumed his position as the chief justice of Bangladesh.

i.The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/66/281 on  28th June 2012 and proclaimed the 20th March of every year as the International Day of Happiness.

World Oral Health Day 2022 – March 20World Oral Health Day 2022World Oral Health Day(WOHD) is annually observed across the world on 20th March to create awareness about the importance of oral health. The day also aims to reduce the burden of oral diseases, which affect individuals, health systems and economies everywhere.
Purpose: To empower people with the knowledge, tools and confidence to secure good oral health.
Campaign theme – 2021-2023: 
The three-year campaign theme 2021-2023 of World Oral Health Day is “Be Proud of Your Mouth”.

  • The campaign provides an opportunity to explore the links between oral health, general health and quality of life. 

Background:
i.World Oral Health Day(WOHD) is an initiative of the FDI World Dental Federation (FDI), an organization that unites the world of dentistry with the aim of achieving optimal oral health for everyone.
ii.The WOHD was first declared in 2007 and was originally celebrated on 12 September, which marks the birth anniversary of Dr Charles Godon, Founder of FDI. 
iii.The campaign was fully activated in 2013 and the date was changed to 20th March to avoid conflict with the FDI World Dental Congress which takes place in September.
Why March 20?
The 20th March was chosen to reflect that, Seniors must have a total of 20 natural teeth at the end of their life to be considered healthy and Children should possess 20 baby teeth.
Healthy adults must have a total of 32 teeth and 0 dental cavities, this expressed on a numerical basis can be translated as 3/20 hence March 20. 
India’s National Oral Health Programme(NOHP)
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MoHFW), Government of India has initiated a National Oral Health Programme to provide integrated, comprehensive oral health care in the existing health care facilities. 
Objective: To improve the determinants of oral health, To reduce morbidity from oral diseases, To integrate oral health promotion and preventive services with the general health care system, and To encourage the Promotion of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) model for achieving better oral health.

The United Nations(UN)’s French Language Day is annually observed across the globe on 20th March to create awareness among the international community about the history, culture and use of the French Language. 

  • March 20 is recognized by the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) as the International Day of La Francophonie.

OIF celebrates the International Day of La Francophonie 2022 under the theme « La Francophonie de l’avenir » (english: The Francophonie of the Future).
Background:
i.On 21st February 2010, on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) announced the launch of “UN Language Days”, a new initiative that aims to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity.

World Down Syndrome Day 2022 – March 21 World Down Syndrome Day 2022The United Nations(UN)’s World Down Syndrome Day(WDSD) is annually observed across the globe on 21st March to raise public awareness about Down Syndrome, a chromosome disorder that affects approximately 3,000 to 5,000 children, every year. 

  • 21st March 2021 marks the observance of 11th World Down Syndrome Day.
  • The theme of WDSD 2022 is “InclusionMeans”.
  • Down Syndrome Awareness Ribbon – Blue and yellow bow symbol.

Background:
i.WDSD was first observed in several countries in 2006 and its website was launched and maintained by the Down Syndrome Association Singapore from 2006-10 on behalf of Down Syndrome International (DSi).
ii.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/66/149 on 19th December 2011 and proclaimed the 21st March of every year as World Down Syndrome Day. 
iii.The first-ever UN-recognised World Down Syndrome Day was observed on 21st March 2012. 
Why March 21?
The date 21/3 (21st March) is chosen as “World Down Syndrome Day” because Down syndrome or Trisomy 21 happens when a person is born with a 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome. 
Campaign:
The #LotsOfSocks campaign aims to create awareness about Down syndrome and help people to talk about WDSD. 
As a part of the campaign, people wear mismatched or most colourful socks to create awareness about down syndrome. 
Down Syndrome:
i.Down syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition.
ii.It occurs when an individual has an extra partial (or whole) copy of chromosome 21.
iii.The reason for the occurrence of this syndrome is not yet identified. 
iv.The estimated incidence of Down syndrome is between 1 in 1000 to 1 in 1100 live births worldwide. 

International Nowruz Day 2022 – March 21International Day of Nowruz 2022

The United Nations (UN)’s International Day of Nowruz is annually observed across the globe on 21st March to create awareness about Nowruz, which promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighbourliness.

  • The word Nowruz (Novruz, Navruz, Nooruz, Nevruz, Nauryz), means “new day”. 
  • Nowruz marks the first day of spring and is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox, when the sun crosses the celestial equator and night and day are equal in length, which usually occurs on 21 March.

The celebration of Nowruz in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey was inscribed as an element in 2009, and extended in 2016, on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

World Puppetry Day 2022: 21 Marchworld puppetry day 2022World Puppetry Day was observed on 21 March 2022. It  aims to recognize puppetry as a global art form and to pay tribute to and honor puppeteers from around the world.

  • It is celebrated on March 21 every year. 
  • The World Puppetry Day was established in 2003 by the Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA) also known as the International Puppetry Association. 

Highlights: 
i.On this day, Sangeet Natak Akademi  under the Ministry of Culture (MoC) is organizing a puppet festival ‘Putul Utsav’ in five cities in India, which include Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Hyderabad (Telangana), Angul (Odisha), New Delhi (Delhi) and Agartala (Tripura).

  • Theme of the festival- ‘Azadi ke Rang, Putul Ke Sang’.

ii.The festival will retold the stories of freedom struggles of India through the medium of puppets.
iii.Various forms of puppetry art such as String, Shadow, Rod and Hand puppets will be showcased.

  • Puppetry in India was traditionally a temple-based art, whose themes were borrowed from puranic literature, mythology, epics and local legends.

ii.It is being organized by the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with Governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and other relevant organizations in the field.
iii.This year’s caters to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 i.e. Responsible Consumption and Production.

History:
i.The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its 30th General Conference in Paris in 1999 first adopted 21 March as World Poetry Day.
ii.It was designated with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.
iii.The International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL) 2022–2032, headed by UNESCO, kicks off on March 21, 2022, with World Poetry Day, reaffirming the international community’s commitment to helping indigenous peoples in their efforts to conserve their cultures, knowledge, and rights.

Karnataka Govt. develops Dishaank App for Land Survey Records

The Dishaank is the mobile application, which is developed to provide seamless access of land records to the people of Karnataka. 

  • The app was developed under the Karnataka Geographical Information System (K-GIS) program of the Karnataka State Remote Sensing Applications Center (KSRSAC). 
  • KSRSAC works under the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (e-Governance), Government of Karnataka.

About Dishaank app:
i.The  Survey Settlement and Land Records (SSLR) of the Revenue Department of Karnataka will provide  easy access to original land records through this app.
ii.It targets  to avail the information about the land and its ownership as recorded in the database of  Bhoomi project since 1990.
iii.The geo-referenced village map data was linked to the land records by SSLR so that citizens do not have to approach the revenue department to know the land details.
iv.Information provided by app-
It provides information about the land, which includes the name of the landowner, area of land, type of ownership, type of land, litigations, land category and other related information.
About Bhoomi Project:
The project is jointly funded by the Union Government  and the Government of Karnataka and  developed and implemented by National Informatics Centre (NIC). It aims to digitize  land records of Karnataka.
