Union Cabinet Approves 3 Labour Law Codes, to be Moved in Monsoon Session of ParliamentThe Union cabinet approved amendments to the labour codes

On September 08, 2020, The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved amendments to the Labour Code on Social Security, Code on Industrial Relations (IR), and Code on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH).  The codes will now be moved in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which starts from September 14, 2020. 

  • The Codes includes benefits like pension, medical benefits to gig workers (Independent contractors, online platform workers, contract workers, on-call workers and temporary workers), and will allow states to introduces significant changes to their labour laws framework, such as rules for retrenchment (act of cutting down or reduction) through notifications.
  • Code on Wages has already been passed by the Parliament on July 30, 2019, and the 3 remaining Codes were sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour for scrutiny. The Committee submitted its report on the Three Codes.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharam Inaugurated Doorstep Banking Services by PSBs & Declared EASE 2.0 2019-20 Awards VirtuallyUnion Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam inaugurated Doorstep Banking Services

i.On September 9, 2020, Union Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman virtually inaugurated Doorstep Banking Services by Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and participated in the online awards ceremony to felicitate best performing banks on EASE Banking Reforms Index for FY19-20. 
ii.Doorstep Banking Services is a part of EASE (enhanced access and service excellence) Reforms to provide convenience of banking services to the customers by the PSBs at their door step through Call Centre, Web Portal or Mobile App at nominal charges.   
iii.The EASE 2.0 awards for FY19-20 were presented in 3 categories viz. Category 1: Theme-Wise Winners, Category 2: Top Improvers, and Category 3: Top Performing Banks
Major achievements by PSBs between March 2018 to March 2020
–Gross NPAs reduced from Rs 8.96 lakh crore in March-2018 to Rs 6.78 lakh crore in March-2020.
–Asset quality has improved significantly, with the net NPA ratio reduced from 7.97% in March 2018 to 3.75% in March 2020.
–There is a sharp decline in fraud occurrence from 0.65% of advances during FY10-FY14 to 0.06% in FY19-20.
–Record recovery of Rs 2.27 lakh crore in FY19-FY20 due to newly setup dedicated stressed account management verticals in PSBs.
–Number of PSBs under Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) reduced to three.
–The provision coverage ratio of 80.9% is highest in eight years.

On September 09, 2020, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog launched Aatmanirbhar Bharat ANIC-ARISE Challenges (Atal New India Challenges in Applied Research and Innovation for medium and Small Enterprises) to stimulate applied research and innovation in Indian Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and startups. 
It will be driven by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and four ministries namely Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to facilitate innovative solutions to sectoral problems.

Ministry of Home Affairs Approved to Rename Hubbali Railway Station as Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Railway Station, HubbaliCentre approved to rename Karnataka's Hubballi railway station into Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Railway station

On 9th September 2020, The Ministry of Home Affairs approved the long pending demand  to rename the Hubbali Railway Station as Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Railway Station, Hubbali in Karnataka after Sri Siddharoodha Swami.

  • The government of Karnataka has to formally issue a Gazette notification for the proposed name change with the spelling of the new name in Devnagri (Hindi), Roman(English) and Regional language.
  • As per Ajay Kumar Singh, General Manager of Southern Western Railways ,the State government issues the gazette notification to complete the name change process.

Lalita T. Hedaoo, Under-secretary to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in a letter to the Principal Secretary, Karnataka’s Revenue Department, has asserted the no objection certificate from Minister of Home Affairs for rename process.

India & Japan sign Agreement on Reciprocal Provision of Supplies and Services India and Japan sign agreement

i.On September 10, 2020, India and Japan signed an Agreement concerning Reciprocal Provision of Supplies and Services or Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) between the Armed Forces of India and the Self-Defense Forces of Japan. 
ii.It establishes a framework for closer cooperation between the Armed Forces of India and Japan in bilateral training activities, United Nations Peacekeeping Operations, Humanitarian International Relief and other mutually agreed activities.
iii.The agreement was signed by Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar and Ambassador of Japan Mr Suzuki Satoshi in New Delhi.

i.On September 9, 2020, the first trilateral dialogue between foreign secretaries from India, France and Australia was held virtually to discuss geo-strategic challenges, enhancing cooperation and to build strong bilateral relations between the trio to ensure a peaceful, secure, prosperous and rules-based Indo-Pacific Region.
ii.The meeting was co-chaired by India’s foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, Francois Delattre; Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Secretary, Frances Adamson.
iii.The focus of the meeting was Covid-19 pandemic and domestic responses to it.

World free of industrially produced trans fats by 2023, if limit set to 2% of oil & fats: WHO report World-free-of-industrially-produced-trans-fats-by-2023

i.In accordance with the report titled, “Countdown to 2023: WHO report on global trans-fat elimination 2020” released on September 8, 2020, so far 58 countries have introduced laws that will protect 3.2 billion people from the harmful substance by the end of 2021. Meanwhile more than 100 countries still need to take actions to remove these harmful substances from their food supplies including India, the country with most coronary heart disease deaths due to trans fats.
ii.To achieve a world free of industrially produced trans fats by 2023, WHO recommended that countries should set mandatory limits for industrially produced trans fats to 2% of oils and fats in all foods or to ban partially hydrogenated oils (PHO).
iii.WHO recommends that trans fat intake be limited to less than 1% of total energy intake, which translates to less than 2.2 g/day with a 2,000-calorie diet.

i.In accordance with the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Living Planet Report 2020, the global vertebrate population declined to an average of 68% between 1970 and 2016. 
ii.The reasons behind this decline is changes in land and sea use, overexploitation of species, high pollution levels, climate change, habitat loss and degradation, including deforestation, driven by humanity.
iii.Global freshwater species have also been disproportionally impacted, declining 84% on average. For eg: The Chinese sturgeon found in the famous Yangtze River, whose spawning population has declined 97% between 1982 and 2015 due to damming of the waterway.

World Getting Closer to Passing 1.5-degree Celsius Warming Limit: UN 2020 ReportUN report Increased warming closing in on agreed upon limit

i.As per the United Nations Science 2020 report, the second in a series highlighted that the world is nearing to pass the temperature limit set by global leaders 5 years ago(limits set in 2015 by world leaders in the Paris climate change agreement)
and may exceed it in the next decade or so.
ii.In the next 5 year, the world has about a 1-in-4 chance to experience a year that is hot enough to keep the global temperature at 2.7 degrees (1.5 °C) above pre-industrial times.
Continue efforts to reduce global warming will significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change.

  • Paris Agreement’s central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

AITA Elected Anil Jain, Rajya Sabha Member as its New President All India Tennis Association elected Anil Jain as its new president

On 6th September 2020, Anil Jain, elected member of Rajya Sabha and national general secretary was elected as the new President of All India Tennis Association(AITA) succeeding Praveen Mahajan. During the Annual General Meetings(AGM) of the national federation, Anil Dhurpar, Secretary of Madhya Pradesh Tennis Association (MPTA) was appointed as the Secretary general of AITA replacing Hironmoy Chatterjee.

Wushu Stalwart Poonam Khatri’s Silver Medal at 2019 World Championship  Upgraded to Gold Medal Wushu-stalwart-Poonam-Khatri-has-upgraded-to-Gold-medal-in-World-Championship

Poonam Khatri who won the Silver Medal at the 15th edition of World Wushu Championships (WWC) 2019 held at Minhang Gymnasium in Shanghai, China has now been upgraded to Gold Medal. 
i.Poonam is now the third Indian to win a Gold in Wushu World Championship after Pooja Kadiyan (2017) and Praveen Kumar (2019). 
ii.Her Gold Medal got upgraded after Iran’s Maryam Hashemi failed in her dope test.  Maryam won the gold medal in the Women’s Sanda event after defeating Poonam Khatri in the finals of the  75 kg category.
iii.Wushu sanda is a martial art which combines full-contact kickboxing, including close range punches and kicks, with wrestling, takedowns, throws, sweeps and kick catches.

i.Poonam was born in Soldha village in Haryana’s Jhajjar District. 
ii.Poonam is also a seven-time Senior National Wushu Championships gold medallist.

Himalyan Day or Himalaya Diwas 2020 – September 9

i.Himalaya Diwas or Himalaya Day is annually celebrated across India particularly in Uttarakhand on 9th September to create and spread awareness on the conservation of the Himalayan Ecosystem.

Nagaland Govt Launched its 1st ‘Naga Telehealth’, a TeleMedicine PlatformNagaland govt launches tele-medicine platform 'Naga Telehealth'

In order to provide quality healthcare services at the Ayushman Bharat – Health and Wellness Centres in Nagaland, S Pangnyu Phom, Nagaland Minister of Health and Family Welfare launched the state’s 1st tele-medicine platform, ‘Naga Telehealth’ in Kohima,Nagaland
It was developed by the state govt in partnership with  NISHTHA, a US Agency for International Development (USAID)’s health systems strengthening project, implemented by Jhpiego(An international, non-profit health organization affiliated with The Johns Hopkins University).
Points to be Noted
i.The platform enables people to connect with medical officers and specialist doctors to receive free of cost general and specialized tele-consultation at their doorstep.
ii.With the support of Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, Dimapur, Nagaland, a provision for referral and  tele-consultation with specialist physicians are also available in the platform
Key Info about the Naga Telehealth
i.It will be launched in a phased manner and will cover the targeted Health and Wellness Centres for the financial year 2020 – 21.
ii.Currently it is introduced in 82 sub health centres (SHCs) connected to medical officers at primary healthcare centres (PHCs) and district hospitals.
iii.It can also provide services to COVID-19 cases and manage essential health care services at the primary level.
iv.The platform is being launched in a web and android platform.

Madhya Pradesh Govt Reintroduces Deendayal Antyodaya Rasoi Scheme Madhya Pradesh reintroduces Deendayal Rasoi Scheme for meals at Rs 10

On September 8, 2020 Madhya Pradesh Government during its 5th virtual cabinet meeting decided to reintroduce Deendayal Antyodaya Rasoi Scheme to provide nutritious and quality food to underprivileged people at a subsidised rate.
The scheme will be implemented by the Departments of Food and Civil Supplies and Urban Development.
The funds for the scheme will be raised through Department of Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

i.The cabinet approved to set up 44 more centres(Kitchens) in addition to the 56 centres announced earlier, i.e., In 2020, 100 centres will be operated under the scheme.
ii.The amount for per plate has been increased to Rs 10 from Rs 5.

  • In the name of BJP(Bharatiya Janata Party) ideologue Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, the scheme was launched in 2017 in 49 districts of the state.
  • In May 2019, the scheme was discontinued due to the previous congress government.
