COVID-19 pushed over 120 million people into Extreme poverty: ECOSOC

In July 2021, the High -Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) conducted the review meeting on the 2030 Agenda for attaining the 17 SDGs. The meeting was hosted by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). During the review meeting, ECOSOC mentioned that, COVID-19 crisis has pushed 119 million to 124 million people into extreme poverty.

Theme of HLPF 2021- “Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development”

Key Findings:

i.Countries across the World shall enact Gender-responsive policies to build back a better future and refocus on attaining SDGs by 2030.

ii.Lower rate of Vaccination in poor countries is the major risk against recovery from the pandemic

Women & Girls are mostly pushed into extreme poverty.

iii.At the end of the review 42 countries agreed to carry out Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) of their SDG targets.
