The Prime Minister (PM) of India, Narendra Modi undertook a 5-nation visit to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil & Namibia from July 02 to 09, 2025, to bolster India’s bilateral ties and global partnerships. This tour marked PM Modi’s longest diplomatic visit in nearly 10 years.
- During his 8-day tour to these 5 countries, PM Modi held a wide range of discussions on key focus areas such as: rare earth earth minerals, cooperation on counter-terror and south-south cooperation.
- The visit highlights India’s ongoing commitment to engagement with Africa and the Global South.
Key Highlights of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Ghana:
On July 03 2025, PM Narendra Modi arrived at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, as part of his 5-nation tour. This marked the 1st bilateral visit by an Indian PM to a West African nation in 30 Years.
- He was accorded a ceremonial guard of honor, along with a 21-gun salute, and a warm reception by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
- PM Narendra Modi addressed the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana in Accra, emphasizing the shared democratic values between the two countries and reaffirming India’s partnership in supporting Ghana’s development journey.
- He also paid tribute to founding President and revered leader of the African Independence Movement, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah at Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, Ghana.
PM Modi Held Bilateral Meeting with Ghanaian President:
During his visit, PM Narendra Modi met with Ghana’s President John Mahama at Jubilee House in Accra. They agreed to deepen their relationship by upgrading it to a Comprehensive Partnership, while also exploring ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and reviewing progress in key areas of mutual interest.
i.PM Narendra Modi discussed that India will establish a Skill Development Centre in Ghana to support youth vocational training and pledged to contribute to Ghana’s ‘Feed Ghana’ programme.
ii.He highlighted that India aims to double bilateral trade with Ghana within next 5 years and share its digital payments expertise through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to drive financial inclusivity.
Indian & Ghana Signed 4 MoUs to Boost Bilateral Cooperation:
Following delegation-level talks between PM Narendra Modi and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, 4 agreements were formalized to bolster bilateral cooperation in key areas such as: culture, health, standardisation, and institutional dialogue.
Key Details of MoU:
i.A MoU was signed on the Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP) between India and Ghana. It aimed to promote greater cultural understanding and exchanges in the fields of art, music, dance, literature, and heritage.
ii.The second MoU was signed between the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), aims to enhance cooperation in standardisation, certification, and conformity assessment.
iii.The 3rd MoU was signed between the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), based in India and the Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine (ITAM), Ghana, aims to foster collaboration in traditional medicine education, training, and research.
iv.The last and 4th MoU, signed between India and Ghana, is related to the Joint Commission Meeting(JCM), which aims to institutionalize high-level dialogue and ensure regular reviews of bilateral cooperation mechanisms.
PM Modi Conferred with Ghana’s Highest State of Honour:
During his visit to Ghana, PM Narendra Modi was conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’ by John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, in recognition of his distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership.
- With this honour, he has become the most internationally awarded Indian PM during his time in office.
PM Modi Presented Symbolic Indian Gifts:
i.Before concluding the 1st leg of his 5-nation tour, PM Narendra Modi presented a pair of handcrafted Bidriware flower vases from Karnataka’s Bidar, to Ghanaian President John Mahama.
ii.He gifted a silver filigree purse from Cuttack, Odisha to First Lady of Ghana, Lordina Mahama.
iii.PM Modi also presented a Kashmiri Pashmina Shawl made from the soft undercoat of the Changthangi goat, to Ghana’s Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
iv.Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament was presented with a Miniature Elephant Ambawari from West Bengal (WB).
Key Highlights of PM Narendra Modi’s Visit to Trinidad & Tobago (T&T):
PM Narendra Modi was on a two-day official visit to Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) from July 03 to 04, 2025 as 2nd leg of his 5-nation tour, at the invitation of T&T’s PM Kamla-Persad Bissessar.
- This marked his 1st visit to the country and the 1st Indian PM visit to T&T since 1999. His visit also coincided with the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Indian immigrants to T&T in 1845.
Key Points:
i.He was received by the PM of T&T, Kamla-Persad Bissessar at Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain, where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome and a guard of honour.
ii.During his visit, PM held a bilateral meeting with his T&T counterpart Kamal Persad-Bissessar at historic Re House in Port of Spain.
- Both leaders discussed a wide range of areas for potential cooperation, including agriculture, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, digital transformation, UPI, capacity building, among others.
- During the meeting, PM appreciated T&T’s decision to join the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA).
iii.PM Modi addressed a large gathering of the Indian diaspora at the National Cycling Velodrome in Couva, T&T.
- He announced that the Government of India(GoI) will launch several initiatives to support the ‘Girmitiya’ community, Indians who left the country in the mid-19th century to work as laborers in former British colonies.
Note: T&T became the first Caribbean country to adopt India’s UPI payment system.
PM Modi Conferred with T&T’s Highest State of Honour:
During his visit to T&T, PM Narendra Modi was conferred with ‘The Order of the Star of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago (ORTT)’, the highest honour of Caribbean nation by Christine Carla Kangaloo, President of T&T at President’s House in St Ann’s, outside Port of Spain, the capital city of Trinidad & Tobago.
- He received this award in recognition of his global leadership, his deep engagement with the Indian diaspora and his humanitarian efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- With this, he became the 1st foreign leader to be honoured with this award.
India & T&T Signed 6 MoUs To Enhance Bilateral Cooperation:
India signed 6 MoUs with T&T to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including infrastructure and pharmaceuticals, following a high-delegation level meeting held between PM Narendra Modi and his counterpart from the Caribbean nation, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
- These 6 MoUs will facilitate deeper cooperation between two countries in the fields of pharmacopoeia, quick-impact projects, culture, sports and diplomatic training, among others.
Key Points:
i.The MoU on Indian pharmacopoeia, aims to facilitate enhanced access to Indian pharmaceutical products in Trinidad & Tobago.
- In addition to this MoU, PM Modi announced that a prosthetic limb fitment camp for 800 individuals will be organised in T&T.
ii.The two countries also signed a MoU on Indian Grant Assistance for Implementation of Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) in T&T.
- As per this MoU, the GoI will provide grant funding for the implementation of short gestation QIPs which will not be more than USD 50,000 for each project and maximum 5 projects will be offered in each financial year.
iii.A MoU was signed on the re-establishment of two chairs of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in Hindi and Indian Studies at the University of West Indies (UWI) in T&T.
iv.Also, MoU was signed to renew the Programme of Cultural Exchanges for the period 2025-2028.
- Under this MoU, T&T will send artists on Percussion (Steel Pan) and other forms of cultural expressions to India to boost cultural ties with both countries.
v.The MoU on Sports Cooperation was signed between two countries to promote training, talent exchange, infrastructure development, and joint capacity-building initiatives.
vi.Both countries signed an agreement on Diplomatic Training Cooperation to strengthen diplomatic engagement and build capacity between them.
Key Announcements/Outcomes:
i.PM Narendra Modi announced extension of Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) Cards to the 6th generation of Indian diaspora living in T & T, where over 40% of the population is of Indian origin.
ii.He also revealed plans to organize a 50-day prosthetic limb fitment camp for 800 individuals in T & T.
iii.He announced the solarisation of the headquarters of Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs of T&T, by providing rooftop photovoltaic (PV) solar panels.
iv.In order to boost the cultural ties between two countries, PM Narendra Modi announced the celebrations of Geeta Mahotsav at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Cooperation in Port of Spain, which will coincide with the Geeta Mahotsav celebrations in India.
v.He formalized the handover of agro-processing machinery worth USD 1 million to the National Agricultural Marketing and Development Corporation (NAMDEVCO), T & T.
PM Modi Presented Symbolic Indian Gifts:
PM Narendra Modi presented a silver replica of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh, UP) and a ‘Kalash’ (sanctified vessel) which contained holy water of Sangam and Saryu river from Mahakumbh to PM of T&T, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Key Highlights of PM Narendra Modi’s Visit to Argentina:
After concluding his visit to T&T, PM Narendra Modi was on a two-day official visit to Argentina from July 04 to 05, 2025 as part of his 5-nation tour, at the invitation of Javier Milei, President of Argentina.
- This visit marked the 1st Indian bilateral visit at the PM level in 57 years.
- Also, this marked PM Modi’s 2nd visit to Argentina; he had earlier visited Argentina in 2018 to attend the Group-20 (G-20) Summit.
Key Points:
i.PM Narendra Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome upon his arrival at the Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina.
ii.PM Modi commenced his visit to Argentina by laying a wreath at the Statue of General Jose Francisco de San Martin y Matorras, Argentina’s Father of the Nation at San Martin Memorial in Buenos Aires.
iii.He also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore at their in Buenos Aires.
PM Modi Held Bilateral Meeting with Argentine President:
PM Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Argentine President Javier Gerardo Milei at Casa Rosada, the official seat of Argentina government. Leaders of both countries held extensive discussions and reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation between both countries.
- During the meeting, they agreed to diversify bilateral trade and ramp up cooperation in areas like: defence, critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, energy, agriculture, science & technology, among others.
Key Points:
i.Both leaders agreed on expanding cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, mining and mineral resources, agriculture, green energy, communication technologies, digital innovation, education and people to people linkages.
ii.During the meeting, PM Narendra Modi sought the support of Argentina in expanding the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), which has the potential to bolster trade ties between the two countries.
- The PTA is aimed to expand economic ties between Indian and MERCOSUR bloc that includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
iii.PM Modi also pitched for deeper cooperation between two countries in the pharmaceutical sector, particularly its capacity to produce high-quality affordable medicines.
PM Modi Conferred ‘Key to the City of Buenos Aires’:
During his visit to Buenos Aires, PM Narendra Modi conferred with the ‘Key to the City of Buenos Aires’ by Jorge Macri, Chief of the City Government of Buenos Aires.
- This honour symbolizes the friendship and mutual trust between India and Argentina.
PM Narendra Modi Presented Symbolic Indian Gifts:
i.During his visit to Argentina, PM Modi presented a ‘Hand-etched Silver Lion on a Fuchsite Stone Base’ from Rajasthan to Javier Gerardo Milei, President of Argentina.
ii.He also gifted a Madhubani painting of the Sun to Victoria Villarruel, Vice President of Argentina. This painting represents one of India’s oldest folk art traditions from the Mithila region of Bihar.
