India Achieves Historic Milestone in Renewable Energy Capacity Addition in FY 2024-25In April 2025, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced a record-breaking addition of 25 gigawatts (GW) of Renewable Energy (RE) capacity for the Fiscal Year 2024-25 (FY25), marking nearly 35% increase from 18.57 GW in FY24.

  • As of March 2025, the total installed power generation capacity in India was 483.26 GW, marking the highest increase in any year.
  • As of February 28, 2025, India has installed a total of 222.86 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity. This includes 102.57 GW of solar power, 48.59 GW of wind power, 11.45 GW of bio-power, 52.07 GW of hydro power, and 8.18 GW of nuclear power.

Solar Energy Growth:

i.Solar power drove 80% of the renewable capacity addition, rising from 15 GW (FY24) to 21 GW (FY25), a 38% increase.

ii.India crossed 100 GW of cumulative installed solar capacity in 2025, becoming the 4th largest solar power producer in the world.

Domestic Solar Manufacturing:

i.Solar module manufacturing capacity doubled from 38 GW (March 2024) to 74 GW (March 2025).

ii.Solar PV cell capacity tripled from 9 GW to 25 GW, supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme under MNRE for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules, attracting Rs. 41,000 crore in investments.

iii.India’s first 2 GW ingot-wafer facility in Gujarat began operations in FY25, reducing import dependency.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:

Over 11.01 lakh households benefited by 31 March 2025, with Rs. 5,437.20 crore disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to 6.98 lakh beneficiaries.

Green Hydrogen Sector:

i.Electrolyser manufacturing incentives worth Rs. 2,220 crore were allocated for 1,500 Megawatt (MW) per annum capacity.

ii.Green Hydrogen production incentives of Rs. 2,239 crore targeted 4.5 lakh tons-per-annum (TPA).

iii.Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM)7 pilot projects (steel sector) received Rs. 454 crore, while 5 transport projects secured Rs. 208 crore to deploy 37 hydrogen vehicles and 9 refueling stations.

PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan) Scheme:

i.Component B: 4.4 lakh solar pumps installed in FY25 (4.2 fold higher than FY24).

ii.Component C: 2.6 lakh pumps solarized (25 times higher than in FY24).

iii.Total solar pumps under PM-KUSUM crossed 10 lakh, with Rs. 2,680 crore spent in FY25 (268% rise).

Note: New Delhi (Delhi)-based Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) sanctioned Rs. 47,453 crore in loans (27% rise) and disbursed Rs. 30,168 crore (20% increase) in FY25.
