The Government of India (GoI) has given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to 33 new products from different states, including Bihar (1), Uttar Pradesh (10), Madhya Pradesh (1), Chhattisgarh (1), and Tamil Nadu (11), as well as the Union Territories (UT) of Ladakh (1) and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) (8).
- The total number of GI Tags in India has risen to 465.
About GI Tag:
GI tags are issued by the Geographical Indication Registry under the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- GI tags are issued as per the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999.
Note: The 1st GI Tag in India was facilitated to the Darjeeling Tea (Agricultural), West Bengal.

Uttar Pradesh:
Banaras Pan (Betel Leaf), Banaras Langda Aam (Mango) and Ramnagar Bhanta (brinjal) of Varanasi city along with Ramnagar Bhanta (Brinjal), Adamchini Chawal (Rice), Aligarh Tala, Bakhira Brassware, Banda Shazar Patthar Craft, Nagina Wood Craft, Pratapgarh Aonla, and Hathras Hing have received GI tag.
Till now, UP has 45 GI goods. Out of these, 20 belong to the Varanasi region.
Tamil Nadu:
11 products including Manapparai murukku, the Cumbum panneer thratchai (grapes), Marthandam honey and the Ooty varkey from Tamil Nadu have got GI tag.
Jammu and Kashmir(J&K):
8 products from J&K including Ramban Sulai Honey, Ramban Anardana and Basohli painting has got GI Tag.
Bihar:
Marcha Rice (Mircha Rice)
The grain’s size and shape resemble that of black pepper, which is why it is referred to as Marcha Rice or Mircha Rice. The rice stands out because of its unique aroma in the grains and the flakes.
- Marcha Rice is known for its aroma, palatability and its aromatic chura (rice flakes) making qualities.
- The cooked rice has a popcorn-like aroma and is fluffy, non-sticky, sweet, and easily digestible.
Madhya Pradesh:
Sundarja mangoes
Sundarja mango is found in abundance in Govindgarh town of Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh. This is a special species of mango, the king of fruits.
- The unique quality of the Sundarja mango is that it lacks fibre and has sugar that may be consumed by diabetic patients.
Chhattisgarh:
Nagri Dubraj
Nagri Dubraj is a traditional special variety of rice in Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh. It is an aromatic, medium slender grain rice variety.
- Nagri Dubraj rice is white and grows around 135-140 centimetres (cm) in height.
- Nagri Dubraj is widely used for eating purposes such as Kheer and Pulao.
Ladakh:
Ladakh Shingskos (Wood Carving)
Ladakh Shingskos is also known as Ladakh Wood Carving.
- The wood carvers of the Ladakh region related to Ladakh Shingskos (Wood Carving) have developed their traditional tools according to the requirement and also developed traditional designs and motifs as per the need and requirement of the product as well as place of use.
