On 6th May 2024, The Pulitzer Board announced the winners of 108th Pulitzer Prize (2024) under the categories such as: Journalism, Books, Drama and Music, and Special Citations.
- Pulitzer Prize is highest national honor in United States of America (USA) in the field of journalism, literature, and music composition.
Key Highlights:
i.ProPublica won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism under the Public Service category.
- ProPublica’s journalists Joshua Kaplan, Justin Elliott, Brett Murphy, Alex Mierjeski and Kirsten Berg were recognised for their groundbreaking report that revealed how politically influential billionaires tried to influence justices of Supreme Courts with lavish gifts. This prompted the court to adopt its 1st code of conduct.
ii.Hannah Dreier of New York Times won 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism under the Investigative Reporting category. She won the Prize for her series of stories focusing on the lives of migrant child labour across the USA.
iii.David E. Hoffman of the Washington Post won 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism under the Editorial Writing category for research series that focuses on how authoritarian regimes uses new technologies to suppress the voices of dissent.
iv.Photography Staff of Reuter won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism under the Breaking News Photography
- Whereas, Photography Staff of Associated Press won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism under the Feature Photography category.
v.This year special citation is given to late writer and critic Greg Tate. Some of his noted work include: Flyboy in the Buttermilk: Essays on Contemporary America, The Black Experience.
- Also, The Pulitzer Board gives the Special Citation Award to the journalists and media workers covering the war in Gaza.
About The Pulitzer Prize:
The Pulitzer Prize was established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American journalist and newspaper publisher. The 1st Pulitzer Prizes were given in 1917.
- It is administered by Columbia University, New York, USA and the Pulitzer Prize Board.
Categories:
i.At present Pulitzer Prize is presented under 24 categories which are broadly classified as Journalism (15); Letters, Drama And Music (8) and Special Citations(1).
ii.Only the winner in the Public Service category of the Journalism competition is awarded a gold medal.
iii.The winners of 22 categories will receive a cash prize of USD 15,000 and a certificate.
Eligibility:
i.Only American citizens are eligible to apply for the Pulitzer Prize in Books,Drama and Music.
- Except for History category, the book must be about history of USA but the author may be of any nationality.
ii.In Journalism category, entrants may be of any nationality but their work must have appeared in US newspaper, magazine or news site that publishes regularly.
