- Uttarakhand has become the 1st state in the country to get the highest number of 18 GI tags in a single day.
- Chief Minister (CM) of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami officially distributed GI certificates to 18 products.
Key Points:
i.With these 18 new products, the total number of GI products in Uttarakhand has become 27.
ii.The 9 products from Uttarakhand – Tejpat, Basmati Rice, Aipan Art, White Rajma of Munsiyari, Ringal craft, Thulma, Bhotiya, Chiura Oil and Copper products have already received GI tag

Points to Note:
i.Uttarakhand Jhangora, known as Jhangora rice or Barnyard millet, is rich in iron, calcium and vitamins. It is suitable for diabetes patients due to low glycemic index.
ii.Uttarakhand Mandua is a finger millet grown in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It is one of the most grown cereals in hilly regions of northern India.
iii.The red colour of Uttarakhand Lal Chawal (Red Rice) is due to the presence of anthocyanin. It is a highly nutritious rice with a nutty flavour.
iv.Almora Lakhori Mirchi from the Almora District of Uttarakhand is a yellow-coloured chilli locally known as “Lakhori”. It is rich in vitamin C with anti-bacterial properties.
v.Uttarakhand Berinag Tea is grown only in the Berinag and Chaukoi regions of Uttarakhand.
vi.Uttarakhand Malta Fruit is a local winter fruit of Uttarakhand.
vii.Uttarakhand Bichhu Buti (Nettle) Fabrics are made from Himalayan nettle fibres, which grow particularly in the Almora and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand.
viii.Kumaoni Rangwali Pichhoda Products is a dupatta-like product which is a traditional outfit worn by women at ceremonies in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Its design consists of a Swastik with Sun, Bell with “Om”.
xi.Chamoli Wooden Ramman Mask is worn by the performers during the Ramman mela. These masks are of various sizes, and colors and depict stories of local deities.
x.Uttarakhand Likhai (wood carving) is a traditional art and craft popular in the Kumaon region. The wood carvings are done on doors and windows of houses and mostly blue colour is used.
xi.Uttarakhand Buransh Sharbat is the juice of the leaves and scarlet red bell-shaped flowers of the Buransh Tree (scientific name is “Rhododendron Arboreum”), It helps to keep the heart and liver healthy.
About GI Tag or GI Certificates:
i.GI certificates are given to products which have unique properties due to the specific geographical origin or location. GI products primarily include agricultural, natural or manufactured goods.
ii.GI Tag is governed by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).
iii.GI tag in India is regulated by the Geographical India of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. Darjeeling Tea was the 1st product in India that received GI tag in 2004.
iv.The tag is valid for 10 years. It can be renewed after the completion of 10 years.
