National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Raising Day 2022

National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) annually celebrates the NDRF Raising day on 19th January to mark the formation of NDRF, under the Ministry of Home Affairs on 19th January 2006. 

  • 19th January 2022 marks the observance of the 17th NDRF Raising Day.

NDRF is a specialised force that is capable of responding to various types of disasters including building collapses, landslides, devastating floods, and cyclones in India and abroad.

Formation of NDRF:

i.The Disaster Management Act 2005 has statutory provisions for the constitution of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for the purpose of specialized response to natural and man-made disasters.

ii.In January 2006, NDRF was constituted with 8 Battalions.

Organisation:

i.At present, NDRF consist of 15 battalions from the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Assam Rifles

ii.Each NDRF Battalion has 18 self-contained specialist search and rescue teams.

iii.In 2021, NDRF has inducted its first Women’s team, a batch of 100 women officials as disaster combatants and rescuers.

iv.The team was deployed in Uttar Pradesh(UP)’s Garh Mukteshwar town on the banks of the river Ganga for contingency duties.

Key Points:

i.NDRF has rescued over 1.44 lakh people and has evacuated more than 7 lakh stranded persons from disaster situations within the country and abroad.

ii.The effective response of NDRF during the 2011 Japan Triple Disaster and 2015 Nepal Earthquake were acclaimed globally.
