118 Indian universities in 2022 QS World University RankingsOn November 2, 2021, QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) released QS Asia University Rankings 2022 featuring 118 Indian Universities following China with 126 universities.

  • The ranking has been topped by National University of Singapore (NUS) for the 4th year in a row. It is followed by China’s Peking University at 2nd position, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and the University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong at 3rd

Assessment:

A total of 687 institutions in 18 nations covered in this ranking. Their assessment was premised upon 11 key indicators viz.-

  • Academic reputation, Employer reputation, Faculty/student ratio, International research network, Citations per paper and papers per faculty, Staff with a PhD, Proportion of international faculty (2.5%) and proportion of international students, and proportion of inbound exchange students (2.5%) and proportion of outbound exchange students

Top 3 Indian Universities in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022 are:

Indian Scenario:

i.Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) (42nd regionally) and IIT Delhi (45th regionally) are the only two Indian institutions among the Top-50. IIT Madras, which was in 50th place last year, has lost four places and now ranks 54th.

ii.Notably, 12 Indian Universities entered this list for the first time.

iii.IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur are at 60th and 64th positions, respectively.

iv.The first rank-holder in the World University Ranking 2021, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru (Karnataka), has ranked 56 in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022.

  • The University of Delhi (DU) is at the 77th position in QS Asia University Rankings 2022.

v.In top 100, India has 7 institutes as compared to 8 in last year

vi.India has the highest number of top-100 universities in the Staff with PhD indicator, taking up 40% of the places.

  • India also performed well in research productivity; Indian universities have 34% of the top-100 spots for Papers per Faculty.

As per 18th Edition of QS World University Rankings 2022 released by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in USA was ranked as the World’s No. 1 University  (for the 10th consecutive time).Indian Institute of Technology  Bombay (IITB) was the top ranked Indian University at 177(score of 46.4).
