World No Tobacco Day

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed every year around the world on 31st May to spread awareness about the dangers of using tobacco. According to World Health Organization(WHO), tobacco kills more than 8 million people every year around the world.

The theme of WNTD 2021 is “Commit to Quit”

The objective of 2021 theme:-This yearly celebration alters the people about dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies especially Covid-19 is an infectious disease that mainly attacks the lungs, and tobacco use continues to be the biggest health threats especially during this pandemic.

Background:-

  • Member States of the World Health Organization(WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to bring global attention to the tobacco epidemic.
  • In 1987, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution on 7th April 1988 to be “a world no-smoking day.”
  • In 1988, a Resolution was passed for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.

Why no to Tobacco:-

i.Tobacco adversely affects the immune system and impairs lung function, making users more vulnerable to developing respiratory infections like colds, influenza, tuberculosis, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

ii. Cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco use worldwide, other uses products include waterpipe tobacco, various smokeless tobacco products, cigars, cigarillos, roll-your-own tobacco, pipe tobacco, bidis, and kreteks.
