World Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day is observed across the globe on 30th May to raise awareness about MS, a chronic, autoimmune neurological disorder that affects the Central Nervous System (CNS), including the brain and spinal cord.

  • The day aims to recognise the social, economic, and cultural impact of MS and promote support, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals living with the condition.

2025 Theme:

The theme for World MS Day 2025 is “My MS Diagnosis”, accompanied by the tagline “Navigating MS Together”

  • The campaign advocates for improved clinical training, research, and fair access to care, while sharing real-life experiences to spread awareness and build informed, supportive communities.

Background:

i.World MS Day was initiated in 2009 by the London, United Kingdom(UK) based Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF), a global network of MS organisations.
ii.MSIF works in collaboration with member organisations from countries such as India, United States of America (USA), Australia, Argentina, Greece, Kenya, Tunisia, Spain, and the UK.

About Multiple Sclerosis (MS):

i.Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the myelin sheath, a protective fatty layer around nerve fibres, disrupting communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

ii.It is an inflammatory demyelinating condition with symptoms such as blurred vision, fatigue, weak limbs, memory loss, and mobility difficulties.

iii.MS primarily affects individuals aged 20 to 40 years and is more prevalent among women (2 to 3 times more than men).

iv.The cause of MS is unknown, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including low Vitamin D levels, Epstein-Barr virus exposure, chronic smoking, and immune dysfunction.

v.Though MS has no cure, Disease-Modifying Therapies (DMTs) are available to reduce symptoms, slow progression, and improve quality of life.

Types of Multiple Sclerosis (MS):

There are four main types of MS:

i.Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS) – First neurological episode that may or may not develop into MS.

ii.Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS) – Episodes of new or increasing symptoms followed by periods of remission.

iii.Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS) – A stage of continuous worsening after RRMS.

iv.Primary Progressive MS (PPMS) – Gradual progression of symptoms from onset without relapses.

National Observance in India:

To mark the occasion, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI) – Chennai Chapter conducted an awareness campaign at Anna Nagar Tower Park, Chennai (Tamil Nadu, TN).

  • The event included yoga therapy, art therapy, and fatigue management sessions to help patients manage stress and improve their quality of life.
  • It also aimed to educate the public on early diagnosis and the available treatments for MS.
