The Sahitya Akademi announced the winners of the Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023, the annual award that recognizes literary works in 24 Indian languages (including English).
- The books were selected based on recommendations made by a Jury of three members in the concerned languages.
Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023:
i.The winners of the Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023 include 9 books of poetry, 6 Novels, 5 short stories, 3 Essays, and 1 Literary Study.
ii.The winners of the awards are recommended by the jury members in 24 languages and were approved by the executive board of the Sahitya Akademi under the chairmanship of Shri Madhav Kaushik, President, Sahitya Akademi.

Prizes of Sahitya Akademi Awards:
i.The Award is in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.
ii.The awards recognize the works under various categories such as poetry, short stories, Novels, Play/Drama, Literary criticism, Autobiography essays, Collections of articles, and Literary History.
iii.The annual literary award presented by Sahitya Akademi recognizes the writers of the most outstanding books first published during 5 years immediately preceding the year of the award (between 1st January 2017 and 31st December 2021)
Criteria for Awardee Selection:
- The author must be of Indian nationality.
- The eligible book or work should be an outstanding contribution to the language and literature it represents.
- In cases of equal merit, additional factors such as the total literary contribution and standing of authors are considered for declaring the award.
Facts about Sahitya Akademi Awards
- The plaque awarded by the Sahitya Akademi was designed by the film-maker Satyajit Ray.
- Makhanlal Chaturvedi was the first Hindi writer who won it in 1955 for his work “Him-Tarangini” (Poetry)
- During Indo- Pakistan War of 1965, the plaque was substituted with national Saving bonds.
- Amrita Pritam was the first woman to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 for a Punjabi Poem called Sunehure.

Bal Sahitya Puraskar
- The award established in 2010 recognizes the writer’s contribution to children’s literature targeting the readership of children aged 9 to 16
- The award includes a casket with an engraved copper plaque and a Cheque of Rs 50,000
Yuva Puraskar
- The Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar was established in 2011 to recognize young writers aged 35 years and below.
- The award carries an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs 50,000

About sahitya Akademi:
The Sahitya Akademi Award is the second-highest literary honor by the Government of India, following the Jnanpith Award.
i.Sahitya Akademi was established by the government of India in 1954, is India’s National Academy of Letters. The first Sahitya Akademi awards were given in1955.
ii.The Akademi preserves and promotes the literature contained in 24 Indian languages(22 languages as per the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution and English and Rajasthan) through Awards, Fellowship, Grants, publications, and others
iii.The head office of the Sahitya Akademi is in New Delhi, Delhi.
