Startup Genome launched The Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2022 1On 14th June 2022, Startup Genome, a world-leading innovation policy advisory and research firm, released the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2022(GSER 2022), the 10th-anniversary edition of GSER, at the Elevating Founders event of London Tech Week 2022 (13th to 17th June 2022).

Various Indian ecosystems have risen in the ranking compared to 2021 ranking.

Bengaluru, Karnataka has ranked 22nd on the global ranking, up one place from the 2021 ranking, while Delhi has moved up 11 places and ranked 26th and Mumbai is ranked at 36.

  • The report was introduced by JF Gauthier, Founder and CEO of Startup Genome.
  • The report was created by Startup Genome in partnership with the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) and Crunchbase.

Rankings of Indian Cities:

i.India has witnessed an increase in the number of large exits and early-stage rounds and a substantial increase in ecosystem value.

ii.India has produced around 44 unicorns in 2021 and the exits increased to USD 14 billion, 10 times higher over 2020.

Bengaluru:

i.According to the report, Bengaluru has ranked number 1 in Asia and 5th on the global stage for tech venture capital (VC) investment in 2022.

ii.Bengaluru is among the top 20 in the Global ecosystem in Bang for Buck, among the top 15 in the Global Ecosystem in Funding and among the top 25 in Global Ecosystem in Performance.

iii.According to the report, the ecosystem value of Bengaluru is USD 105 billion which is higher than Singapore(USD 89 billion) and Tokyo (USD 62 billion).

Note: Further research by data intelligence platform Dealroom.co for London & Partners showed that in the first five months of this year Bengaluru’s tech firms raised.

Kerala and Telangana:

Kerala and Telangana are among the top 10 in the Global Ecosystem in Affordable talents.

  • Kerala has ranked 4th in the Global Ecosystem in Affordable talents and the state has ranked first in Asian Ecosystem in Affordable Talent. Kerala is ranked among the top 10 in the Global ecosystem in Bang for Buck and among the top 30 in Asian Ecosystem in Funding.
  • Telangana has ranked 4th largest in the Asian Ecosystem in Affordable Talent and ranked among top 10 in Global Ecosystem in Affordable talent. Telangana is ranked among the top 15 in the global ecosystem in Bang for Buck and Asian Ecosystem in Funding.

Top 100 emerging ecosystems:

  • Chennai (tied #31–40) and Pune (tied #51–60)  and Telangana(tied #61-70) are featured among the top 100 emerging startup ecosystems globally. 
  • Chennai saw a USD 1 billion exit in business software startup Freshworks, which moved to Silicon Valley after founding in India.
  • Mumbai’s has moved out of the Emerging Ecosystems ranking and into the global overall rankings. 
  • Even though Telangana scored higher than Chennai and Pune in terms of funding and market reach, the ecosystem lagged in performance and talent & experience.

About the GSER 2022:

i.The 2022 edition ranks the top 30 and 10 runner-up global ecosystems and includes a top 100 ranking of emerging ecosystems.

ii.It also explores the startup communities from a regional perspective and separately ranked the ecosystems in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, MENA, North America, and Oceania.

iii.The GSER 2022 includes a ranking of the leading 140 ecosystems, continental insights, and exclusive founder-focused articles from thought leaders and experts around the world.

  • Startup Genome published the 1st edition of GSER in 2012.
  • Ranking is based on 5 factors, viz, Performance, Funding, Connectedness, Market Reach, Knowledge, Talent & Experience

Key Points:

i.Silicon Valley has ranked 1 in the global startup ecosystem ranking followed by New York City and London in 2nd position followed by Boston in 4th and Beijing in 5th position.

ii.North America dominates the global ranking with around 47% of the top 30 ecosystems in the region.

iii.Asia experienced a 312% increase in the dollar amount of exits over $50 million from 2020 to 2021.

iv.A record 540 companies achieved unicorn status in 2021, up from 150 in 2020.

About London Tech Week 2022: 

i.London tech week 2022 (from 13th to 17th June 2022), is a flagship tech event of the United Kingdom(UK).

ii.The tech week unites the global government and corporate leaders and other stakeholders to discuss the power of technology for societies.
