Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2024 At 350, Delhi highest ranked Indian cityAccording to the Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index 2024, Delhi has ranked 350th among the world’s largest 1,000 cities and emerged as the highest-ranked Indian city.

  • New York City, the United States of America(USA) has topped the 2024 Index followed by London, The United Kingdom(UK) and San Jose, USA at 2nd and 3rd rank.

Note: As per the index, 1000 largest cities in the world accounted for 60% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2023.

About Global Cities Index 2024:

i.The index provides comprehensive evaluation of the 1000 cities located in 163 different countries.

ii.The index assess these cities based on 27 indicators across 5 different categories with different weightage  Economics(30%), Human Capital(25%), Quality of Life(25%), Environment(10%) and Governance(10%).

iii.The index classified these cities in different regions which are: North America (103), Western Europe (141), Central America and the Caribbean(46), Middle East and North Africa (62),South America (63), Sub-Saharan Africa (86), Eastern Europe and Central Asia (107), Southern Asia (137), East Asia (205) and Oceania (12).

India-Specific:

i.Delhi outperformed Mumbai in various metrics, including Economics, Human Capital, and Quality of Life.

  • Delhi lagged in the only in Environment category, ranking 973rd, the 2nd worst among indian cities, surpassing only Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh(UP) (989th).

iii.All Indian cities ranked at 380th position in the Governance category.

v.Among all the Indian cities featured in Global Cities Index 2024, Sultanpur has been ranked at lowest position, 1000th spot in the index.

vi.Some other Indian cities in the index are: Kolkata, West Bengal (528th ), Pune, Maharashtra (534th ), and Thrissur, Kerala (550th ).

Global Scenario:

ii.The top 10 cities in the index are located in North America, Western Europe, East Asia and Oceania.

iii.In the Economics category, New York is ranked 1st with a score of 100 followed by Los Angeles, USA (97), San Jose (95.3). Among the top 10 cities in this category, 7 cities are located in USA.

iv.London (100) tops the Human Capital category, as it has the most globally ranked universities of any city in the world, followed by Tokyo (92.3) and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia(91.4).

v.Grenoble, France topped the Quality of Life category followed by Canberra, Australia(99.8) and Berne, Switzerland (99.7) ranked at 2nd and 3rd position respectively.

vi.Suva (Fiji) (100), Fortaleza (Brazil) (98.8)and San Juan (Puerto Rico)(98) are top performing cities in the environment category.

vii.Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington of New Zealand topped the Governance category with a score of 100.
