The National Doctors Day is annually observed across India on 1st July to recognise the efforts and contributions of the doctor’s community to society and the commitment of the doctors towards their profession.
- The day also marks the birth and death anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, who served as the Chief Minister(CM) of West Bengal(WB) from 1948 to 1962.
- The Indian Medical Association(IMA) celebrates National Doctors Day across India.
The headquarters of IMA has declared “Save the Saviours” as the theme of National Doctors Day 2021.
About Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy:
i.Dr.Bidhan Chandra Roy was an Indian physician who has also served as the 2nd CM of West Bengal.
ii.He was born on 1st July 1882 in Patna Bengal Presidency, British India and passed away at the age of 80 on 1st July 1962.
iii.The government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna for public affairs in 1961.
Significance Doctors Day:
i.The national Doctors Day 2021 is dedicated to all the medical practitioners who lost their life in the line of duty during the COVID-19 pandemic and to honour the doctors and other healthcare professionals who are serving as the front liners during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ii.The IMA has stated that more than 1500 eminent doctors have lost their lives during this pandemic.
Event:
i.The IMA has organised a special Doctors Day program at the IMA headquarters in New Delhi.
ii.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed the medical fraternity at the event.
iii.The IMA has also paid homage to the martyrs and awarded the Doctors Day Award to the eminent doctors.
