According to the 6th edition of Hurun India Art List (2024) released by the Hurun Research Institute on 28th May 2024, British Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor topped the list for the 6th consecutive year.
- He topped the list due to the robust sales of his artwork at public auctions, which amounted to Rs 79.9 crore.
About Hurun India Art List 2024:
i.The list featured India’s Top 50 most successful artist alive according to the sales of their work sold at public auctions as of 1st January, 2024.
ii.According to the list, the cumulative sales of most successful Indian artists reached Rs 301 crore which marked 19% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) growth.
About Anish Kapoor:
i.Anish Kapoor was born on 12th March, 1954 in Mumbai, Maharashtra and resides in London, United Kingdom, (UK).
ii.Among his noted works, “Cloud Gate” played an important role in his success which reinforces his status as a prominent contemporary artist.
iii.He was awarded with Padma Bhushan, India’s 3rd highest civilian honour in the category of Arts in 2012 for his exemplary work in arts.

Highlights of 2024 Report:
i.The total number of lots sold in 2024 was 789, a 46% increase compared to last year(2023) which registered 539 lot sales.
- The combined lots sold by the top 10 artists featured in the list accounted for 42% of total arts sold (789).
ii.The entry point for the top 10 artists in the list saw an increase of approximately 287%, which increased from Rs 1.99 crore (2021) to Rs 7.70 crore.
iii.According to the Hurun India Art list, 13 artists saw an increase of 100% in cumulative sales value.
iv.The combined value of the top 50 works of art increased from Rs 82.57 crore (2021) to Rs 252.61 crore (2024) which marked a 3-fold increase.
v.Raghav Babbar(27) from Rohtak, Haryana, ranked at 8th spot, is the youngest Indian artist in the Hurun India Artist List 2024 with total sales of Rs 12.1 crore.
vi.Krishen Khanna (99) is the oldest Indian artist in the list, ranked 5th with combined value of his art work Rs 18 crore. This showed an increase of 32% compared to previous year.
vii.Thota Vaikuntam (82) from Hyderabad(Telangana) and Paresh Maity (59) from New Delhi (Delhi) for the 1st time made into the Top 10 of the list.
- Thota Vaikuntam secured 9th spot with turnover of Rs 10.2 crore whereas, Paresh Maity ranked 10th in the list this year with turnover of Rs 7.8 crore.
viii.According to the list, AstaGuru Auction, Mumbai (Maharashtra) emerged as the top auction house by selling most number of artworks (28).
Women Artists on 2024 List:
i.The list featured 10 female artists and number of female artists increased by 1 compared to previous year. The combined contributions of them accounted for 14% of the total value.
- The cumulative sale of all female artists reached 41 crores which increased by 19%.
ii.Arpita Singh, 87 year old (ranked 3rd ) topped among the female artists in the list as well as she retained her position as the most successful women artist with total sales value of her artwork amounted to Rs 23 crore.
- Her most expensive painting “Watchdog” contributed significantly to her overall sales.
