December 18 is observed as Minorities Rights Day every year since 1992 across the world to create awareness on rights of minorities. On this day, governments and other organizations conduct debates on the recent developments in policies and practices in Minority Rights both in India and at the global level.
The UN had declared that, “States shall protect the existence of the national or ethnic, cultural, religious and linguistic identity of minorities within their respective territories and encourage conditions for the promotion of that identity”.
The National Commission for Minorities celebrates the Minority Rights Day every year on December 18. The commission has played a major role in protecting the rights of the minority communities and in bringing about better understanding among the various religious minority communities in India.
