WEP & TransUnion CIBIL Partner to Launch SEHER Program to Empower Women EntrepreneursWomen Entrepreneurship Platform and TransUnion CIBIL Partner to Launch SEHER Program to Empower Women EntrepreneursOn July 5, 2024, the Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) and TransUnion CIBIL Limited (Formerly: Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited), have partnered to launch SEHER, a credit education program aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs in India with financial literacy, credit education, and business skills to enhance their access to financial tools and drive economic growth.

  • This program will support India’s USD 5 trillion economy goal by empowering women to start and grow profitable businesses.
  • The program was launched by Anna Roy, Mission Director of WEP and Principal Economic Adviser, NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India).
  • The program is part of WEP’s Financing Women Collaborative (FWC), a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at accelerating access to finance for women entrepreneurs.

Key Points:
i.As per Udyam Registration Portal (URP) of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME), India has 63 million MSMEs, with 20.5% being women-owned, employing 27 million people.

  • Rural areas have a higher share of women-owned enterprises (22.24%) compared to urban areas (18.42%).

ii.Accelerating women’s entrepreneurship could create over 30 million new women-owned enterprises and 150 to 170 million new jobs.

iii.As per TransUnion CIBIL data, demand for business loans by women grew 3.9 times from FY2019 to FY2024.

  • The share of women borrowers with business loans increased by 10% during this period.
  • As of March 2024, 38% of the 1.5 crore borrowers with live business loans were women.
  • The portfolio balance for business loans by women borrowers grew at a 35% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) from March 2019 to March 2024.

iv.The share of women borrowers for agri-business loans, commercial vehicle, and commercial equipment loans remained constant at 28% from March 2019 to March 2024.

Dr. Jitendra Singh Launches InFLiMeN Network to Combat Fatty Liver DiseaseDr. Jitendra Singh Launches InFLiMeN Network to Combat Fatty Liver DiseaseOn July 5, 2024, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), launched the Indo-French Liver and Metabolic Diseases Network (InFLiMeN) at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • This initiative addresses the rising prevalence of fatty liver disease in India and aims to prevent and cure metabolic liver disorders.
  • It also highlights a significant bilateral collaboration between India and France in medical research, focusing on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), which can progress to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

About InFLiMeN:
i.The initiative seeks to understand and manage liver diseases through a comprehensive Omics Approach’ for biomarker discovery.
ii.It is a collaborative effort led by Shiv Kumar Sarin, Director of ILBS, and Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), MoST.
iii.The network will involve 11 French and 17 Indian doctors, with support from the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR)/
Centre Franco-Indien pour la Promotion de la Recherche Avancée (CEFIPRA).
iv.InFLiMeN will focus on understanding fatty liver disease’s pathophysiology and developing therapeutic strategies, considering genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.
v.It marks a significant step in international scientific collaboration, uniting experts from both countries to share knowledge and resources.
Key Points:
i.Liver diseases are increasing in the Indian subcontinent and Europe due to lifestyle changes, diet, and metabolic syndromes like diabetes and obesity.

  • In India, NAFLD affects about 20% of non-obese patients, unlike in the West where it is more commonly linked with obesity.

ii.Fatty liver disease impacts one in three Indians, emphasizing its widespread nature and need for intervention.
iii.There is a significant correlation between fatty liver disease and diabetes, with many patients having both conditions.
iv.NAFLD and Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) show similar progressions from steatosis to steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
v.The initiative aims to contribute to India’s public health goals and improve healthcare infrastructure by 2047.
vi.By addressing fatty liver disease through InFLiMeN, India seeks to reduce incidence, enhance management, and improve the quality of life for millions.

GoI Makes ISI Mark Mandatory for Stainless steel & Aluminium Kitchen UtensilsGovernment makes ISI mark mandatory for stainless steel, aluminium utensilsThe Government of India (GoI) has mandated the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) mark for stainless steel and aluminium kitchen utensils to conform to the national quality standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

  • The ISI mark developed by the BIS is aimed at assuring product quality and safety, enhancing customer safety.
  • The ISI mark is now compulsory for these utensils, with non-compliance being punishable.

QCO Issuance for ISI Mark:
i.The Quality Control Order (QCO) that makes the ISI mark compulsory for these kitchen utensils was issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) on 14 March 2024.
ii.The order prohibits the manufacture, import, sale, distribution, storage, or exhibition of stainless steel or aluminium utensils without the BIS standard mark.
Standards and Consumer Confidence:
i.BIS has formulated 2 Indian Standards: IS 14756:2022 for stainless steel and IS 1660:2024 for aluminium utensils.
ii.These standards cover various aspects including:

  •  The BIS has codified these attributes in the Indian Standard IS 14756:2022, which specifies the requirements for various types of utensils used in cooking, serving, dining, and storage. It encompasses, Material requirements to ensure the safe composition of materials used in manufacturing.
  • The BIS has developed the Indian Standard IS 1660:2024, which outlines the specifications for wrought and cast aluminium utensils up to 30 litres in capacity including hard anodized and non-stick unreinforced plastic coating. This standard ensures that aluminium utensils meet the highest material quality and performance standards.

Commemorative Coin of Rs 100 Released in Memory of Lokmat Founder Jawaharlal DardaCommemorative Coin Of Rs 100 Released In Memory Of Lokmat Founder Jawaharlal DardaOn 2nd July 2024, Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister (CM) of Maharashtra, released the Rs 100 commemorative coin marking the birth centenary of Jawaharlal Amolakchand Darda, freedom fighter and Founder-Editor of Lokmat Media Group.

  • The coin was released on the 101st birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Darda (2nd July 2024) at Yashwantrao Chavan Auditorium in Nariman Point, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • The ceremony celebrated Jawaharlal Darda’s enduring legacy and Lokmat’s significant role in Maharashtra’s media landscape.

i.Lokmat Media Pvt. Ltd. is a leading multi-platform media company and Lokmat is the largest-read Marathi newspaper in Maharashtra published by Lokmat Pvt Ltd.
ii.Previsouly, Government of India released a Rs 5 postage stamp in 2005 as a tribute to his contribution to India.
Key People: Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM of Maharashtra; Dr Vijay Darda, Chairman of the Editorial Board of Lokmat Media Group and former member of Rajya Sabha; Rajendra Darda, Editor-in-Chief of Lokmat Media Group were present during the event.
About the commemorative coin:
The circular coin made of quaternary alloy weighs 35 grams has a diameter of 44 millimeter(mm).
Reverse: Features a bust of Jawaharlal Darda and “Birth Centenary of Shri Jawaharlal Darda” in english and Devanagari script with year 1923 and 2023.
Obverse: Features Ashoka Lion Emblem with “सत्यमेव जयते” and Rs 100 denomination.
About Jawaharlal Amolakchand Darda:
i.Jawaharlal Amolakchand Darda, popularly known as Babuji, was born on 2 July 1923 in Yavatmal, Maharashtra.
ii.He organised the Youth Conference on 10 August 1942. In 1944, he founded the Azad Hindu Sena at Yavatmal.
iii.He remained President of the Yavatmal City Congress between 1946-56.
iv.In 1952, he acquired Lokmat and launched Lokmat’s 1st daily edition on 15 December 1971 from Nagpur, Maharashtra. He set up the first college at Yavatmal in 1959 named Amolakchand Mahavidyalaya.
v.He has also served as Treasurer of the Congress party, and Chairman of the National Housing Federation. He was nominated a member of Legislative Council by the Governor of Maharashtra in 1972.
vi.In 1973, he represented the India at an International Conference on Housing in Copenhagen, Denmark.
vii.From 1978 to 1993, he has served as Minister of Industry, Energy, Public Works, Health, Food & Civil Supplies, etc in the Maharashtra Government.
viii.He passed away on 25 November 1997.

MoRD & CESL Signed MoU to facilitate STREE for SHG Women of DAY-NRLMMinistry of Rural Development and Convergence Energy Services Limited signs MoU to facilitate Green Mobility for SHG Women of DAY-NRLMThe Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), to facilitate the “Sustainable Transport for Rural Entrepreneurs through Electric Bicycles” (STREE) for Self Help Group (SHG) Women under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).

  • STREE aims to empower the rural economy, especially rural women, by providing access to green mobility through Electric Bicycles.

Note:
i.The CESL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), itself a Joint Venture (JV) of public sector companies under the Ministry of Power (MoP).
ii.DAY- NRLM promotes SHG women-led enterprises with diversified opportunities in the manufacturing and service sectors covering the farm and non-farm domains.
Signatories:
The MoU was signed by Smriti Sharan, Joint Secretary of the Rural Livelihoods from MoRD; and Vishal Kapoor, Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), CESL, in the presence of Shailesh Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Department of Rural Development, MoRD.
Significance and Impact:
i.This partnership is expected to support the economic and social empowerment of rural women and accelerate the creation of “Lakhpati Didis” (women earning one lakh rupees or more annually).
ii.It facilitates economic independence for SHG women through green mobility and supports the government’s initiative to empower 3 crore “Lakhpati Didis” in rural areas.
iii.This project aims to enhance the livelihood opportunities and socio-economic status of SHG women and contribute to decarbonization efforts in rural mobility.

ISRO Announced Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon for 1st National Space DayISRO Announces Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon for First National Space DayOn 4th July 2024, Dr. Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched ‘Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon’ – (Indian Space Hackathon) as part of the first National Space Day (NSpD 2024) celebrations.

  • The first National Space Day will be celebrated on 23rd August 2024.
  • ISRO organises the hackathon to create application-driven ecosystems and bring in innovation in space-based applications benefiting both society and the nation.

Background:
i.On 23rd August 2023, ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 Vikram lander was successfully landed on the lunar south polar region.
ii.To commemorate the feat, the Government of India declared that the 23rd August of every as National Space Day.
About ‘Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon’ :
i.The hackathon will feature 12 problem statements in the areas of geospatial domain, space science, image processing from centres of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Space Applications Centre (SAC), among others.
ii.It has also identified areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) and declared open for undergraduate/ post graduate/ PhD students across the country.
iii.Eligibility: A team of 3 to 4 students can participate in the hackathon and address the challenges with innovative solutions but it involves 2-level screening process.
Selection Process:
i.At 1st step, 100 teams will be shortlisted based on their ideation and relevance to the problem-solving and after that, 30 teams will be shortlisted by an expert committee for the grand finale.

  • The teams shortlisted for grand finale will be announced on 2nd August, 2024.

ii.The grand finale will be a 30-hour long marathon which will be held on 23rd August 2024 at National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) Outreach Facility in Jeedimetla, Hyderabad, Telangana.
iii.The hackathon event will be managed by a dedicated web portal. Interested students can submit their proposals through this portal until 26th July, 2024.

RBI Penalizes 5 Banks, including PNB for Regulatory Non-ComplianceRBI penalizes five banks, including PNB, for regulatory non-complianceOn 5th July 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that it has penalized 5 banks, including Punjab National Bank (PNB), in the circular issued in the 1st week of July for non-compliance with various RBI directions.

  • Before PNB, 4 other banks which were penalized by RBI: Gujarat Rajya Karmachari Co-operative Bank(Rs 7.50 lakh penalty) Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Rohika Central Co-operative Bank (Rs 1.50 lakh penalty), Madhubani, Bihar; National Co-operative Bank(Rs 2 lakh penalty) Mumbai, Maharashtra; and Bank Employees’ Co-operative Bank(Rs 1 lakh penalty) Kolkata,West Bengal(WB).

i.RBI in exercise of powers given under the provisions of section 47 A (1) (c) read with sections 46 (4) (i) and section 51 (1) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 1.31 crore on PNB. Thus, PNB became the 5th bank to be penalized.
ii.The RBI imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 10,000 on YES Bank for not exchanging mutilated notes.
iii.The RBI also announced that it has cancelled the licence of Maddur (Karnataka)-based Shimsha Sahakara Bank Niyamitha due to its worsening financial position.

RBI Cancels License Banaras Merchantile Co-operative Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the licence of Banaras Merchantile Co-operative Bank Limited, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (UP) over inadequate capital and earnings prospects.
i.The bank ceases to carry on banking business which includes, among other things, accepting deposits and repaying deposits, with effect from July 04, 2024.
ii.The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies (RCS), UP has also been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator.
Note : Since January, licences of Sumerpur Mercantile Urban Cooperative Bank Limited, Jai Prakash Narayan Nagari Sahakari Bank Ltd, Shree Mahalaxmi Mercantile Co-operative Bank Ltd, and Hiriyur Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd have also been revoked.

Noida (Uttar Pradesh)-based fintech company Paytm, owned by One97 Communications Limited (OCL), has launched ‘Paytm Health Saathi’, a health and income protection plan for merchant partners, available on the ‘Paytm for Business’ app, starting at Rs 35 per month.

  • ‘Paytm Health Saathi’ aims to safeguard the well-being of Paytm’s merchant partners by providing affordable, comprehensive healthcare benefits, ensuring their health and business continuity.
  • Healthcare Services include unlimited doctor teleconsultation and in-person doctor visits (Outpatient Department (OPD)) within its partner network.

President Droupadi Murmu Conferred 10 Kirti Chakras, 26 Shaurya ChakrasPresident confers 36 Gallantry awardsOn 5th July, 2024, President of India, Droupadi Murmu conferred 36 Peacetime Gallantry Awards including, 10 Kirti Chakras, of which 7 were given posthumously and 26 Shaurya Chakras, of which 7 were given posthumously to the personnel of the Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces and State or Union Territory (UT) Police.

  • These awards were given during Defence Investiture Ceremony (Phase-1) held at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.
  • These awards were given to the personnel for displaying conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and extreme devotion to duty.

Key Points:
i.Among the recipients of Kirti Chakra given posthumously, 4 were from  Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF): Inspector Dilip Kumar Das, Head Constable Bablu Rabha and Constable Sambhu Roy and Raj Kumar Yadava of 210 Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) Battalion.
ii.Apart from 6 other personnel from the India Army, Constable Safiullah Qadri of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) Police was also bestowed a Shaurya Chakra posthumously.
iii.This year a group of personnel from the Indian Army, the India Air Force (IAF), Indian Navy and also personnel from Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) have also been conferred the Shaurya Chakra.

Labour leader Keir Starmer appointed as the UK’s 58th PMLabour leader Keir Starmer officially becomes Britain's new Prime MinisterOn July 5, 2024, Keir Starmer became the 58th Prime Minister (PM) of United Kingdom (UK) by succeeding Rishi Sunak. He was appointed by the King Charles III, UK’s monarch.
Election Results:
This follows Keir Starmer’s Labour Party win by securing 412 (+211) seats over Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party which received 121 (-250) seats in the 650-seat House of Commons. This number of seats for the Conservatives is the fewest seats in their history.

  • The Labour party got 35% votes(412 seats) and the Conservatives got 24% votes.

Note : Rishi Sunak was the first British Asian and first Hindu to hold the post of PM of the UK from October 2022 to July 5 2024.
About Keir Starmer:
i.Keir became the first Labour Party PM since Gordon Brown (2007-2010) i.e. after 14 years.
ii.He is also the first Labour Party leader to win a general election since Tony Blair (1997 to 2007).
iii.He was Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union (2016-2020) and Shadow Immigration Minister (2015-2016).He is the first Knight of the realm to became UK’s PM since Sir Alec Douglas-Hume in 1963.

LIC Raises Stake in IDFC First Bank to 2.68% via Private Placement
The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), India’s largest insurance company, has increased its stake in IDFC First Bank Limited from 0.20% to 2.68% of the paid-up capital.

  • In terms of number of shares, the holding has increased from a little more than 1.42 crore to over 20.02 crore.
  • LIC acquired 18,60,34,900 shares in the IDFC First Bank at an average price of Rs 80.63 apiece in a private placement offer. The overall acquisition cost is Rs 1,500 Crore.

Note: Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based IDFC FIRST Bank is a Universal Bank in India, offering end-to-end Corporate Banking and Trade Finance.

  • International Day of Cooperatives 2024 falls on 6 July 2024. The theme of International Day of Cooperatives 2024  is “Cooperatives Building a Better Future for All.”
  • 6 July 2024 marks the 102nd International Cooperative Day and the 30th UN International Day of Cooperatives.
  • The Day also commemorates the establishment of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), one of the oldest Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), and one of the largest organizations by the number of people represented.

Background:
i.The International Cooperative Day has been celebrated on the first Saturday of July since 1923.

  • The 1st ever Cooperators Day was observed on 7 July 1923.

ii.In December 1992, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution A/RES/47/90, proclaiming the 1st Saturday of July 1995 to be the International Day of Cooperatives, marking the centenary of establishing the ICA.

World Zoonoses Day 2024 – July 6World Zoonoses Day - July 6 2024 World Zoonoses Day is annually observed across the globe on 6 July to raise awareness about Zoonosis, an infectious disease that is naturally transmissible from vertebrate animals to humans.

  • The Day aims to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases, control zoonoses by managing threats for future infections.

Background:
i.The Day commemorates the anniversary of the day that Louis Pasteur, a French chemist, and microbiologist, administered the 1st vaccine for humans against rabies, a vaccine preventable viral zoonotic neuro-invasive disease which is usually fatal.
ii.In July 1885, Louis Pasteur administered the rabies vaccine to save the 9-year-old Joseph Meister who was bitten by a rabid dog.

Karnataka Signed Two MoU With DN Solutions and EMNI Co. Ltd Worth Rs 1040 crores Karnataka govt inks Rs 1,040 cr MoUs with DN Solutions and EMNI in South KoreaThe Karnataka Government signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) total worth Rs 1040 crore with DN Solutions and EMNI Co. Limited in Seoul, South Korea.

  • The MoUs were signed during the delegation’s visit to South Korea, led by M B Patil, Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development.
  • It was followed by the ‘Roadshow on Investment Opportunities in Karnataka’ in Seoul which was jointly organised by the Karnataka government, the Embassy of India, and the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ICCK).

About MoUs:
i.DN Solutions: It has committed an investment of Rs 1000 crore to construct machine manufacturing facilities, a research and development centre, and a technical support centre for Indian manufacturing companies.

  • This initiative is projected to generate around 350 jobs over the next 7-10 years.

ii.EMNI Co. Limited: It has committed to invest Rs 40 crore in Karnataka for battery technology developments, including the storage, testing, and recycling of LG Energy Solution’s battery cells in Karnataka.

  • This project is expected to create 100 jobs and position Karnataka as a key player in the electric vehicle and energy storage markets.

iii.These MoUs and strategic partnerships in South Korea highlights Karnataka’s commitment to becoming a worldwide hub for industrial and technical developments, fostering economic growth and providing new job opportunities in the region.
Additional info: 
i.M B Patil also met with senior executives from NIFCO Korea Inc., which manufactures plastic fastening products and components for the automotive and electronics industries, and will establish an automotive fastener component plant in Gauribidanur, Karnataka.
ii.The delegation assured NIFCO support in land acquisition, fast-tracking approvals, and starting construction.
iii.Patil also invited DN Solutions, EMNI, and Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) to participate in Karnataka’s forthcoming Global Investors Meet, Invest Karnataka 2025.

Justice Sheel Nagu Appointed Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court
The President of India Droupadi Murmu, in exercise of the powers conferred by the clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, appointed Justice Sheel Nagu as the 66th Chief Justice (CJ) of the High Court (HC) of Punjab and Haryana with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.
i.He was currently serving as the Acting Chief Justice (ACJ) of the Madhya Pradesh (MP) HC after CJ Ravi Malimath demitted the office on May 24, 2024.
ii.His appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court (SC) Collegium comprising CJ of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai on December 28, 2023 after the retirement of CJ Ravi Shankar Jha on October 13, 2023.
Note: Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva has been appointed as the ACJ of the MP High Court succeeding Justice Sheel Nagu.
